Vassar Holds Off Late Farmingdale Surge
Vassar College - 12, Farmingdale State - 11
Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - In a game that was
highlighted by a hard hitting, physical brand of lacrosse, Vassar's
men's lacrosse team got a career-high six goals from sophomore Cody
Scandore (North Andover, MA/North Andover) and held off a strong
offensive surge from Farmingdale State, to post a 12-11 victory
Wednesday afternoon at Prentiss Field.
With the victory, the Brewers improve to 2-6 on the season, while
Farmingdale State drops to 0-5. The Rams will host
Morrisville State College this Saturday, March 29th at 1:00 p.m.
The Brewers built a 7-3 halftime lead, but the Rams came out of
intermission with a vengeance, netting three consecutive goals to
begin the third period to close the gap to 7-5.
Vassar's Scandore had an answer for every Ram tally. The sophomore
scored twice in the third period for his fifth and sixth goals of
the game, providing the Brewers with a narrow 9-7 lead going into
the fourth period.
The last 15 minutes were action packed, with the game tied three
times before the final horn sounded. Farmingdale sophomore Paul
Randazzo (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) equaled Scandore's play, with
six impressive goals of his own, one of which tied the game 10-10
with 8:48 left to play.
Just 32 seconds after Randazzo's goal, Brewers freshman Sam
Thypin-Bermeo (Princeton, NJ/The Hun School) took a centering pass
from Scandore and fired a cannon shot into the upper right corner
of the Rams' net to once push the Brewers ahead, 11-10.
Thypin-Bermeo had three goals in the game.
Farmingdale continued to show heart as junior Sean Maxwell (West
Babylon, NY/W. Babylon), who had three goals in the game, scored on
a beautiful cross-field pass from teammate Eddie Rifice (Babylon,
NY/Babylon) to tie the game at 11-11 with just 3:49 left to play.
The game remained tied for two more minutes before Vassar's Thypin Bermeo scored the games winning goal, lacing a shot toward into the goal off a nifty pass from sophomore Nick Cardillo (Honeoye Falls, NY/McQuaid Jesuit). The Rams would have a few final scoring chances, but were denied late in the game by Vassar sophomore goalie Ed Pappo (Malvern, PA/Conestoga) who made 13 saves.
Farmingdale goalie Teddy Leone (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) made 19 saves.
