Men’s Lacrosse 2004 Recap


The Men’s Lacrosse team finished the 2004 campaign with an overall record of 8-6. The Rams finished the regular season with an 8-5 record and received a bid to the ECAC Championships where they were defeated by #1 seed Montclair State. During the regaular season, Coach D’Argenio’s team defeated future conference members Kings Point, Manhattanville, Mt. St. Vincent’s and SUNY Maritime.

Offensively, the team was led by junior attackman John Vaeth, who led the team with 35 goals, 14 assists and 49 points. Freshman Attack/Midfielder Joe Meola finished second on the team with 28 goals and 37 points while freshman Gordon Bopp added 19 goals. Newcomer Ryan LaFlare chipped in with 11 goals, 44 ground balls and finished the year with a .57 percent face-off percentage.

Defensively, the team was led by two individuals, Junior defenseman Scott Rothbaum and junior goalie Anthony Sheridan. Rothbaum provided outstanding defense throughout the season and led the team with 29 takeaways. Sheridan anchored the defense after staring every game in goal and recording 254 saves. His 72 percent save percentage ranked him in the top 10 percent in the nation.

Men’s Lacrosse Falls in First Round of ECAC’s

The #4 seed Rams ended the 2004 season with a 13-5 loss in the ECAC Championships against #1 seed Montclair State. The Red Hawks Chris Meixner scored three unanswered goals early in the first period and then converted on a man-up opportunity to make it 4-0. The Rams answered back with two quick goals to cut the deficit to 4-2, before Montclair went on a 5 goal rally to break the game open and lead 9-2. Alan Annazone made 14 stops in goal for the Red Hawks to secure the victory and lead them into the Championship game.

John Vaeth (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) led the Rams with three goals and an assist. Joe Meola (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) finished with a goal and an assist and Tom Stanley (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) added one goal. Anthony Sheridan (Bellmore, NY/Mepham) made 16 saves in net.

Farmingdale finished the season 8-6 overall, while Montclair State (13-3) moved on to host Richard Stockton College in the finals on Sunday, May 9th at 1pm.

Mt. St. Vincent Stunned by Farmingdale 22-4

The Men's Lacrosse team improved to 8-5 overall as they defeated Mt. St. Vincent's 22-4. Rich Felicetta (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) and Matt Lott (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) finished with 5 points each for Farmingdale. The Rams outshot the Dolphins 53-26 as six Farmingdale players finished with two goals. Anthony Sheridan (Bellmore, NY/Mepham) made 14 saves for the Rams during his 45 minutes in goal, while also contributing a goal and an assist in the fourth period. John Vaeth (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) finished off the game in net for the Rams, after scoring two goals and an assist during the first 3 periods. Farmingdale competes independently in lacrosse, so they now await an ECAC bid for post-season play. The ECAC Championships take place from May 7th - May 9th.

The Ram’s will host Suffolk Community College next Saturday, May 1st at 1pm.

Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Division II Dominican College 13-5

The Rams improved to 7-5 overall with a 13-5 win over Division II Dominican College (3-9). Farmingdale dominated throughout the first two periods and took a 10-3 lead at the half. Dominican was unfortunately plagued by penalties as they finished with 21 to the Rams’ 9. Farmingdale led in ground balls (58-38), shots (55-33) and face-offs (13-6), while also scoring on five extra man opportunities. Gordon Bopp (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) and Ryan LaFlare (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) both netted 3 goals for the Rams, Joe Meola (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) and Mike Cullen (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) scored two a piece. Anthony Sheridan (Bellmore, NY/Mepham) held the Chargers to only five goals off 33 shots and finished with 16 saves.

Farmingdale faces Mt. St. Vincent at home on Saturday, April 24th at 1pm.

Vaeth Named ECAC Co-Player of the Week

Junior Co-Captain John Vaeth (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) was named ECAC Metro Co-Player of the Week on March 20th, 2004. Vaeth finished the week with seven goals and one assist for the Rams 1-0 week. In the Rams 18-14 win over Manhattanville, John scored 7 goals and added one assist to help Farmingdale improve to 6-5 this season. Farmingdale has now had two lacrosse players named ECAC Metro Player of the Week, as Anthony Sheridan was named Goalie of the Week on March 6th.

Vaeth, Meola and Sheridan Help Rams to Victory Over Manhattanville

Farmingdale picked up a big win over Manhattanville 18-14 to improve their record to 6-5 overall, while the Valiants fall to 3-7. The Rams never trailed throughout the game, outscoring the Valiants 4-0 in the first and leading 8-4 at halftime. John Vaeth (Merrick, NY/Calhoun), who transferred from Manhattanville, finished with 7 goals for Farmingdale. Joe Meola (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) added 5 goals and 1 assist for the Rams, while Anthony Sheridan (Bellmore, NY/Mepham) was once again solid in net with 21 saves. Farmingdale will host Division II Dominican College on Wednesday, April 21st for a game at 4pm.

Reese Baillie and the Cyclones Overtake the Rams 13-9

Farmingdale State (5-5) fell to Centenary College (4-4) 13-9 in today’s non-conference game. At halftime, the score was tied up at 5-5 before the Cyclones struck a third period rally outscoring the Rams 5-2 and held on to the win through the final period. Centenary’s Reese Baillie (Surrey, BC/ Earl Marriott) led the team with 4 goals and 4 assists, including the game winner with 37 seconds left in the third. The Rams’ John Vaeth (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) finished with 3 goals, while Joe Meola (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) and Bryan McCullough (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) tallied 2 goals each.

Gordon Bopp (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) scored a goal and an assist and Jim Gregory (East Meadow, NY/Clarke) added a goal for the Rams. Matt Lott (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) dished out 3 assists for Farmingdale. Mike Cullen (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) and Matt Ramacca (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) each picked up one assist.

The Cyclones’ Nick Pielmeir (Morganza, MD/Choptico), Chris Robbins (West Chester, PA/W. Chester East) and Craig Ellis (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater Raritan) tallied 2 goals. Matt Rogers (Leonardtown, MD/Leonardtown), Ryan Loomis (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater Raritan) and Jon Powless (Mechanicsville, MD/Chopticon) were the other goal scorers for Centenary.

The Rams will travel to Manhattanville on Wednesday, April 14th for a 4pm game.

Rams Fall to Oswego State 12-8

Farmingdale fell to 4-4 this season as they were defeated by Oswego State (1-6) 12-8. Oswego led 7-3 at halftime and was able to hold on to the victory despite the Rams fourth period comeback. Farmingdale goalie Anthony Sheridan (Bellmore, NY/Mepham) kept the team alive throughout the game, making 32 saves as he faced 64 shots. Scott Ferguson (Ronkonkoma, NY/Connetquot) and Steve Tronovich (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) both scored three goals for the Lakers. Oswego’s Jeff Salisbury (Oswego, NY/Oswego) finished with 2 goals and 4 assists. Mike Malecki (Baldwinsville, NY/Baker) and Brandon Mapes (Rockford, MI/Rockford) added 2 goals each for the Lakers. Oswego goalies Mike Nolan (Auburn, NY/Jordan-Elbridge) and Travis Hon (Cape Elizabeth, ME/Cape Elizabeth) combined for the win in net with 13 saves.

Farmingdale goals came from Ryan LaFlare (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) and Matt Lott (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) with two each, while Gordon Bopp (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst), Joe Meola (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point), Cory Neyland (Freeport, NY/Freeport) and Mike Cullen (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) each tallied one goal for the Rams.

The Rams travel to Kean University on Monday, April 5th for a 7pm game.

Sheridan Comes Up Big in Net for Farmingdale

Anthony Sheridan (Bellmore, NY/Mepham) was outstanding in net today for Farmingdale (4-3) as he turned away 21 shots on goal to defeat King’s Point (3-6) 7-3. This was a heated match between two teams, going scoreless in the first period. Joe Meola (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) opened up the scoring for the Rams at 12:52 in the second to take the 1-0 lead, before Sean Dougherty (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) converted off a pass from Jim Flannery (Massapequa, NY/Hold Trinity) to tie it 1-1. Farmingdale struck back to take a 3-1 lead before the half with goals by Meola and John Vaeth (Merrick, NY/Calhoun). Meola finished with four goals for Farmingdale, including the eventual game winner with 4:52 left in the third period. The Rams held the Mariners scoreless in the third, but let up two in the second by Tony Buleza (Bel Air, MD/C.Milton Wright) and Matt McCarthy (Germantown, PA/Seneca Valley). Matt Ramacca (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) and Rich Felicetta (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) added one goal each in the fourth period for the Rams as they held on to take the victory. Mariner goalie John Pagano (West Islip, NY/St. Anthony’s) tallied 16 saves on the day.

Farmingdale takes on Oswego State on Saturday, April 3rd in a home game at 1pm.

Meola and Vaeth Lead Rams Past Plattsburgh State 12-9

Freshman Joe Meola (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) and Junior John Vaeth (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) led the Rams past Plattsburg State (2-2) 12-9, scoring a combined 9 goals and 11 points for Farmingdale. Meola scored five goals and Vaeth finished with four goals and two assists as they helped improve the Rams record to 3-3. Junior Anthony Sheridan (Bellmore, NY/Mepham) faced 31 shots and made 22 saves for Farmingdale. Freshmen Gordon Bopp (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) added two goals and one assist for the Rams, while Ryan LaFlare (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) added one goal and one assist. The Rams host King’s Point on Thursday, April 1st for a 4pm game.

Farmingdale (2-3) fell to an undefeated Montclair State (5-0) 11-7. Freshman Joe Meola (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) finished with 3 goals on the day for the Rams, while Junior Anthony Sheridan (Bellmore, NY/Mepham) made 8 stops in net for Farmingdale. The Red Hawks converted well on their man-advantage opportunities going 3-for-12, while the Rams went 0-for-9.

Junior Matt Ramacca (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) opened the scoring just six seconds into the game for Farmingdale, before Montclair sophomore Rich Doyen (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) evened the score at 3:45. John Della Pesca (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) tallied three consecutive goals and Brian Fischer (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) added another to put the Red Hawks up 5-1 at the end of the first period. Farmingdale’s Cory Neyland (Freeport, NY/Freeport) scored with a man down, before Meola chipped in the first two of his goals to make it 5-4. Kevin Gondres (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) scored for Montclair at the end of the second for a 6-4 advantage at the half. John Vaeth (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) would score 45 seconds into the third for the Rams, to cut the lead to 6-5 before the Red Hawks tallied three consecutive goals to pull away 9-5. Gordon Bopp (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) and Meola added the last two goals for Farmigndale but Montclair held onto the victory.

The Rams now host Plattsburgh State on Sunday, March 28th at 1pm.

Farmingdale’s Late Rally Falls Short Against Richard Stockton

The Rams (1-2) held the Ospreys (2-1) to only two goals in the final two periods, but were unable to complete their late rally to come away with the victory. Gordon Bopp (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) struck first for Farmingdale, tying the score 1-1 in the first before Stockton netted six consecutive goals to take a 7-1 lead. John Vaeth (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) ended the Ospreys rally, striking back with four minutes remaining in the second off a pass from Matt Ramacca (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin).

Trailing 7-2 at the half, Farmingdale outscored Stockton 5-2 in the third and fourth periods. Matt Lott (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) started off the Rams rally with 1:59 remaining in the third. Bopp scored his second early in the second and Joe Meola (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) connected off a pass from Ramacca to make it 8-5. Stockton’s Anthony Severino (Edison, NJ/St. Joseph) scored his third goal of the game to break up our late rally before John Vaeth completed his hat trick with two goals at the end of the game.

The Rams will travel to SUNY Maritime on Wednesday, March 17th at 4pm, weather permitting.

Lacrosse Drops Home Opener to Vassar 8-5

The Men’s Lacrosse Team (1-1) lost their first home game 8-5 to Vassar College (1-0). Gordon Bopp (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) scored the first goal of the game, unassisted, with 7:39 left in the second and the Rams took the lead into halftime 1-0. Pat McAlpine (Centerport, NY/Harborfields) tied the score in the first minute of the third off a pass from Thomas Boardman (Brattleboro, VT/Brattleboro), while Steve Cataldo (West Islip, NY/West Islip) and Zach Winkler (West Islip, NY/West Islip) each netted a goal in the next two minutes to make the score 3-1 Vassar. Farmingdale’s Mike Cullen (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) and Justin Blau (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) came right back and evened the score 3-3 with 9 minutes left in the third. Winkler’s four goals in the final two periods, including the game-winner, gave the Brewers the edge over Farmingdale.

Cullen led the scoring with 2 goals for the Rams. Matt Lott (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) chipped in one goal, while Joe Meola (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) tallied 2 assists and Adam Christie (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) had one assist.

The Rams now travel to Richard Stockton on March 13th for a 2pm game.

Rams Win Season Opener Against Marymount

The Men’s Lacrosse Team (1-0) improved their record to 1-0 this season, as they picked up their first victory against Marymount (0-1) 7-6. Marymount had a 5-3 lead going into the fourth period, before the Rams scored 4 goals to take the victory. The Rams were led by Freshman Gordon Bopp (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) with three goals.

Junior’s John Vaeth (Merrick, NY/Calhoun), Matt Lott (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) and Matt Ramacca each scored one for the Rams, while Freshman Joe Meola (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) scored his first college goal. Anthony Sheridan (Bellmore, NY/Mepham) recorded 21 saves on the day.

Nick Hoefer (Oak Hill, VA/Oakton) led MU with 3 goals and 3 assists, while Allan Zullinger (Leesburg, VA/Stone Bridge) added 2 goals. Matt McConnell (Fairfax, VA/Robinson) made 14 saves.

The Rams next game is at Army Prep on February 28th at 2pm.
