Farmingdale State - 75, Sarah Lawrence - 63
Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State men's basketball team improved to 9-2 in Skyline Conference play after defeating Sarah Lawrence, 75-63, at home this evening.
After each team scored a basket to open the game, FSC (13-7) sophomore guard Nick Hurowitz (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) hit a 3-pointer and sophomore guard Aaron Davis (Valley Stream, N.Y.) tallied back-to-back layups to put the Rams ahead, 9-2.
The Gryphons (6-10, 3-5 Skyline) still trailed by seven, 18-11, with 8:25 remaining in the half, but used a 7-0 run to tie the game at 18-18.
Sarah Lawrence took a one-point edge, 30-29, into the break behind 16 points from senior forward Justin Bailey (Phoenixville, Penn.), but quickly surrendered the lead after a layup by FSC freshman guard Jevon Santos (Elmont, N.Y.).
With the Rams in front, 35-34, Davis knocked down a 3 to extend the Farmingdale State advantage to four with 17:42 on the clock.
FSC still held a four-point advantage, 47-43, with 11:29 remaining before a pair of free-throws by sophomore forward Tre Riggins (Baldwin, N.Y.) put Farmingdale State on top by six.
After an SLC miss, Riggins converted a three-point play to put the Rams on top, 52-43.
The Gryphons trailed 58-49 with 7:54 to play and used two Bailey free-throws to cut their deficit to seven. Farmingdale State responded with a Dominique Senat (Elmont, N.Y.) layup to regain a nine-point lead.
With 3:09 left and FSC in front, 67-58, Sarah Lawrence drew a trio of fouls and converted a layup and three free-throws to close within four, 67-63.
Just 31 seconds later, Hurowitz was fouled and hit two free-throws. On the next possession, sophomore guard Corey Powell (Valley Stream, N.Y.) stole the ball and Hurowitz tallied the fast break layup as Farmingdale State went ahead, 71-63.
The Rams hit four free-throws down the stretch and did not allow a Gryphons point as they went on for the 75-63 victory.
Hurowitz led the way for FSC with a team-high 18 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Riggins finished with 16 points, including 10 made free-throws, to go along with eight rebounds and two blocks, while Senat registered 11 points and eight rebounds. Santos tallied 10 points, two rebounds, two assists and a game-high three steals.
Senior guard Liam Barry (Los Angeles, Calif.) recorded a game-high 24 points for Sarah Lawrence, while Bailey finished with 21 points in the loss.
The men's basketball team next travels to play #6 Yeshiva on Saturday, February 5th at 8:30 p.m.
