Rams Edge Brooklyn in Non-Conference Matchup

Farmingdale State - 66, Brooklyn - 63


Brooklyn, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State men's basketball team traveled to Brooklyn College for a non-conference game on Wednesday night and earned a 66-63 victory. The Rams improved to 4-5 on the season, while the Bulldogs fell to 1-9.

Trailing 12-3 in the opening minutes, FSC used a 19-3 run, highlighted by three 3's from sophomore guard Zamere McKenzie (Beacon, N.Y.), to go out in front, 22-15. After a Xavier Whitfield (Brooklyn, N.Y.) 3-pointer cut the Brooklyn deficit to 22-18, McKenzie answered with his fourth 3 of the half to put the Rams back up by seven with 9:01 left on the clock.

With 3:53 remaining, Farmingdale State sophomore guard Corey Powell (Valley Stream, N.Y.) connected on a 3-pointer to increase the Rams' advantage to 32-25. The Bulldogs ended the half with five unanswered points and went into the break trailing by two, 32-30.

McKenzie led all scorers with 14 first half points after going 4-of-5 from behind the arc.

Leading 38-37 early in the second half, Farmingdale State used three straight layups by Powell and a layup and free-throw from senior forward Dominique Senat (Elmont, N.Y.) to go up by 10. Brooklyn quickly answered with a 9-0 run to close within one, 47-46, with 7:26 left to play. The Rams followed with five unanswered points over the next 50 seconds to bring the lead back to six.

With 1:53 remaining and FSC leading by one, Powell knocked down a 3 off the pass by freshman guard Jevon Santos (Elmont, N.Y.) to bring the advantage to four, 60-56. On Brooklyn's next possession, junior guard Kayin Olajide (New York, N.Y.) hit a 3-pointer to again cut the deficit to one.

Santos hit a layup and free-throw after being fouled on Farmingdale State's next trip down the floor to put the Rams ahead 63-59 with 1:05 on the clock.

A pair of free-throws by McKenzie put the Rams in front 65-61 with 16 seconds remaining before BC sophomore guard Harvey Zuric (Rockhill, S.C.) hit a layup only six seconds later.

After FSC made 1-of-2 free-throws on their next possession, Senat blocked a 3-pointer by Brooklyn and secured the defensive rebound for the 66-63 non-conference victory.

McKenzie finished the night with a team-high 18 points to go along with six rebounds, three assists and two steals, while Powell had 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Senat recorded a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds in the win for Farmingdale State.

The Bulldogs were led by senior guard Noah Shy (Valley Stream, N.Y.) who scored a game-high 22 points.

The Rams will next host Wesleyan in a non-conference game on Saturday, December 11th at 3:00 p.m.
