Powell Scores 23 Points in Non-Conference Loss at Widener

Chester, Penn. - The Farmingdale State men's basketball team traveled to Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania for a non-conference game this afternoon and fell, 77-65. FSC sophomore guard Corey Powell (Valley Stream, N.Y.) scored a career-best 23 points in the loss. The Rams dropped to 2-4 overall, while the Pride improved to 4-1.

After Farmingdale State opened up a 4-0 advantage, Widener recorded eight unanswered points, including two 3-pointers from junior forward Steven Matlack (Mount Laurel, N.J.), to go in front, 8-4.

The Pride held a 12-8 lead with 14 minutes to play in the first half and went on an 11-4 run to take a 23-12 advantage.

FSC responded with a 9-0 run, capped off by back-to-back 3's by Powell, to knot the score at 23-23 with four minutes left in the half.

After a layup by Widener senior guard Jared Peters (Shillington, Penn.), freshman guard Kobe Thomas (Hicksville, N.Y.) and Powell knocked down 3-pointers to put the Rams on top, 29-25.

Widener trailed 32-31 at the halftime break but outscored FSC, 11-2, over the first 3:19 of the second half to take a 42-34 advantage.

Following a layup from Rams' junior forward Elijah Galloway (Bronx, N.Y.), the Pride hit a pair of 3's to go ahead, 48-36, with 15:09 on the clock.

FSC recorded the next three baskets to close within six at 48-42, but a pair of Widener jumpers allowed the Pride to regain a 10-point lead, 52-42, with 10 minutes left.

The Rams were down by 12, 64-52, before Powell hit another 3-pointer to cut their deficit to nine.

Widener answered with six straight points to take their largest lead of the game, 70-55. The Pride would go on for the 77-65 non-conference victory.

Powell shot 8-for-11 from the field, including 5-for-7 from 3-point range, to score his game-high 23 points. Senior forward Dominique Senat (Elmont, N.Y.) notched 12 points, while sophomore forward Tre Riggins (Baldwin, N.Y.) recorded 10 points and four rebounds. Freshman guard Jevon Santos (Elmont, N.Y.) totaled four points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals and sophomore guard Zamere McKenzie (Beacon, N.Y.) registered three points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Peters tallied a team-high 15 points for the Pride, while senior guard Pat Holden (Cape May, N.J.) had 14 points, four rebounds and three assists.

The men's basketball team next opens their Skyline Conference schedule with a home game against #2 Yeshiva on Wednesday, December 1st at 8:00 p.m.
