Hawkinson Leads NYU Past Rams in Season Opener

Farmingdale, N.Y. - NYU senior forward Bobby Hawkinson (Frankfort, IL) recorded a double-double with a game-high 21 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Violets to a 73-56 non-conference victory over Farmingdale State this evening. The FSC men's basketball team is 0-1 on the year, while NYU improved to 2-0.

Trailing 16-10 with 10:16 remaining the first half, the Rams used a free-throw by sophomore guard Corey Powell (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and a Jevon Santos (Elmont, N.Y.) layup to cut the deficit to three.

The Violets answered with a 10-0 run, which saw seven points from freshman guard Zay Freeney (Phoenix, AZ), to extend the advantage to 26-13 with 5:17 on the clock.

Farmingdale State went into the break down 10, 32-22. Senior forward Dominique Senat (Elmont, N.Y.) recorded eight first half points for the Rams, while Santos scored seven. For NYU, Hawkinson scored 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting and had seven rebounds.

After a Powell 3-pointer cut the Violets' lead to 42-33 with 14:21 remaining, NYU answered with a quick 8-2 run to go out in front by 15.

With 6:52 left to play and NYU on top 61-45, a Hawkinson free-throw and back-to-back Alex Maticiuc (Monaco, Monte-Carlo) baskets put the game out of reach as the Violets went up by 21.

NYU went on for the 73-56 road victory.

Senat led the way for Farmingdale State with a team-high 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting and six boards, while Santos finished the night with 14 points.

Hawkinson registered his game-high 21 points after shooting 9-for-13 from the field. Maticiuc tallied 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting and Freeney (5-for-9) added 11 points.

The Rams next will travel to New Jersey City University for a non-conference matchup on Saturday, November 13th at 2:00 p.m.
