Hartwick - 87, Farmingdale State - 80
Oneonta, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State men's basketball team played host-school Hartwick in the championship game of their Tip-Off Tournament this afternoon and lost, 87-80. FSC dropped their first game of the season and now stand at 2-1 overall, while the Hawks improved to 3-1.
Trailing 23-19 midway through the first half, Rams' freshman guard Zac Goldstein (Warwick, N.Y.) knocked down a 3-pointer off the assist from senior forward Can Oztimurlenk (Islip, N.Y.) to close within just one.
Over the next 4:45, Hartwick outscored Farmingdale State 16-9 to take an eight-point lead at 39-31.
FSC answered with a 7-1 run to cut their deficit to two, but the Hawks would tally back-to-back 3-pointers to regain an eight-point advantage.
Hartwick led 52-46 at the halftime break and used a 14-7 run over the first 7:43 of the second to open up a 66-53 lead.
Still down by 13, 78-65, with 7:09 remaining, FSC senior guard Anthony Miller Jr. (Yonkers, N.Y.) and senior forward Jermaine Fraser (Valley Stream, N.Y.) combined for 12 straight points to cut the Hawks lead to just one at 78-77.
With 3:13 left to play, Hartwick sophomore forward Bobby Connors (Rockville Center, N.Y.) tallied a layup and junior guard Sam Hanley (Cranston, RI) knocked down a 3 to extend their advantage to six.
The Hawks held the Rams to just three points over the final 1:09 and shot 4-for-6 at the free-throw line en route to the 87-80 win.
Senior forward Hunter Schenkel (Sayville, N.Y.), who was named to the All-Tournament Team, finished with a game-high 24 points to go along with five boards. Miller Jr. tallied 14 points and seven assists, while Fraser tallied a double-double with 12 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high five steals. Goldstein and senior guard Troy Feeney (Hewlett, N.Y.) registered nine points apiece, while sophomore forward De'Shawn Todman (Harlem, N.Y.) added four points, eight rebounds, two assists and a career-high four blocks in the loss.
Hartwick was led by Connors, who notched 24 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
Farmingdale State next travels to play non-conference opponent Ramapo on Wednesday, November 20th at 7:30 p.m.
