Farmingdale State - 93, New Paltz - 90
Farmingdale, N.Y. - Farmingdale State senior guard Troy Feeney (Hewlett, N.Y.) shot 9-for-18 from the field as he scored a career-high 26 points to lead the Farmingdale State men's basketball team to a 93-90 win over New Paltz in their season opener this evening.
Leading 50-43 at the start of the second half, FSC (1-0) extended their lead to 10, 57-47, as they used a 7-4 run capped off by a Feeney jumper.
Still trailing by 10, 61-51 with 14:49 remaining, Hawks' (1-1) junior guard Jake Passaretti (Holbrook, N.Y.) knocked down a jumper before junior forward Richard Altenord (Dix Hills, N.Y.) hit a layup and a free-throw to cut their deficit to five.
After a dunk by Rams' senior forward Jermaine Fraser (Valley Stream, N.Y.), New Paltz scored the game's next seven points to tie the game at 63-63.
On the next possession, FSC senior forward Hunter Schenkel (Sayville, N.Y.) was fouled and hit both free-throws to take a two-point advantage.
Hawks' RJ Meyers-Turner (Uniondale, N.Y.) answered with a three-pointer just 11 seconds later to go in front, 66-65.
Still down by one, 76-75, with 6:31 left to play, FSC sophomore forward De'Shawn Todman (Harlem, N.Y.) hit a layup before Schenkel knocked down a jumper and free-throw to put Farmingdale State ahead, 80-76.
With the Rams leading by six at 87-81, Hawks' senior forward Tristan Wissemann (Shelter Island, N.Y.) scored four straight points before a layup by Passaretti knotted the game at 87-87 with 1:13 on the clock.
With 44 seconds remaining, Todman stole the ball, was fouled and hit the first free-throw. After Todman missed the second, Rams' senior guard Anthony Miller Jr. (Yonkers, N.Y.) pulled down the rebound, got fouled and hit both free-throws to take a three-point advantage.
On the ensuing possession, the Hawks were fouled and went 1-for-2 at the line.
After Miller Jr. knocked down two more free-throws, Wissemann hit a layup to cut the deficit to two, 92-90.
With seven seconds left, Feeney hit one free-throw to give FSC a 93-90 lead. New Paltz missed their final three-point attempt with one second on the clock as the Rams went on for the 93-90 non-conference victory.
Along with his 26 points, Feeney tallied 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Miller Jr. went 11-for-12 at the foul line and finished with 19 points, three rebounds and three assists, while Schenkel recorded 13 points and five boards. Todman registered career-high's with nine points, 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals and Fraser produced eight points, 10 rebounds and a game-high four blocks. Senior forward Can Oztimurlenk (Islip, N.Y.) and freshman guard Corey Powell (Valley Stream, N.Y.) added six points off the bench in the win.
New Paltz was led by Wissemann, who tallied a game-high 27 points.
FSC next travels to play in the Hartwick College Tip-Off Tournament on Friday and Saturday, November 15th and 16th. Hartwick will play CCNY at 5:30 p.m., while the Rams will square off with Plattsburgh on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The consolation and championship games will be played at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., respectively, on Saturday.
