Indianapolis, Ind. - The NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Committee announced Monday the field of 64 teams for the 2019 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship.
Farmingdale State (20-7) will travel to the University of Rochester and face the #20 Yellowjackets (20-5) in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, March 1st at 7:30 p.m. The other first round game features #13 Amherst (23-4) versus Rosemont (15-12) at 5:30 p.m. The winners will meet on Saturday, March 2nd at 7:00 p.m.
The Rams earned a berth into the NCAA Tournament after defeating Yeshiva, 81-75, in the Skyline Finals to claim the conference's automatic bid. FSC has four players averaging double-digit scoring and are led by senior forward George Riefenstahl (Bayport, N.Y.) (14.4 points and 11.0 rebounds per game) who was named First Team All-Conference and the Skyline Defensive Player of the Year. Senior guard Matthew Graham (Valley Stream, N.Y.), who earned Second Team All-Skyline honors, is averaging a team-high 15.9 points per game, while senior guard Ali Mableton (Brentwood, N.Y.) and junior guard Ryan Kennedy (Maspeth, N.Y.) are averaging 12 and 11.4 points a contest, respectively. The Rams last NCAA Tournament appearance was in 2017 where they fell in the first round at #6 Middlebury.
Rochester punched their ticket by receiving one of the 21 at-large bids in the NCAA Tournament. Offensively, Rochester is led by senior guard Ryan Clamage (Lake Forest, Ill.) who is averaging a team-best 16.2 points to go along with 6.6 rebounds per game.
#13 Amherst joined the field of 64 by winning the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). The Mammoths defeated Hamilton, 62-56, in the championship game. Sophomore guard Grant Robinson (McLean, Va.) is the leading scorer for Amherst as he is averaging 16 points per game.
Rosemont earned an NCAA Tournament berth after a 100-97 victory over Cairn in the Colonial States Athletic Conference Championship game. Junior guard Keith Blassindale (Philadelphia, Penn.) leads the Ravens in scoring (19.1 ppg), assists (70) and steals (53).
The championship provides for a 64-team tournament. Automatic qualification (AQ) is granted to 43 conference champions, which form "Pool A." One team is selected from true independents and schools from conferences that do not have an automatic bid for their champions (Pool B). The remaining 20 teams are selected from those teams in conferences with automatic bids that did not win their conference's AQ and the remaining Pool B institutions (Pool C). The teams are geographically paired, whenever possible.
Sixteen sites will host four teams for first and second-round competition Friday-Saturday, March 1-2. Second-round winners will advance to one of four sectional-round sites March 8-9. Winners of the four sectional games will advance to the semi-finals and finals March 15 and 16. All games, except the semifinals and finals, will be played on the campuses of competing institutions. The semifinals and finals will be conducted at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, IN.
