Farmingdale State - 85, Sarah Lawrence - 77
Bronxville, N.Y. - Farmingdale State junior forward George Riefenstahl (Bayport, N.Y.) recorded a career-high 28 points and a game-high 15 rebounds in the Rams 85-77 Skyline Conference victory over Sarah Lawrence College last night. FSC improved to 13-6 overall and 11-3 in conference play, while the Gryphons fell to 4-17, 3-13.
After SLC sophomore forward BJ Sanders (Silver Spring, Md.) recorded the opening layup of the game, Farmingdale State used a 13-0 run, including six points from Riefenstahl and five points from junior guard Matthew Graham (Valley Stream, N.Y.), to take an early 11-point advantage, 13-2.
Trailing 20-9 with 12:11 left in the first half, Sarah Lawrence used a 14-4 run over the next 3:05 to cut the deficit to just one. The Rams would respond with a 10-0 run, including three Riefenstahl layups, to go back up by 11, 34-23.
Over the final 3:30 of the half, the Gryphons would outscore Farmingdale State 13-6 as they went into the break trailing by four, 40-36.
Riefenstahl tallied a double-double on 16 points and 10 rebounds in the first half alone.
Down 42-38 early in the second, a 3 by SLC senior guard Malin Segal (Wenham, Mass.) allowed Sarah Lawrence to close within one. After a Troy Feeney (Hewlett, N.Y.) layup put FSC up by three, another Segal 3-pointer tied the game at 44-44.
After falling behind by two, 48-46, the Rams would hit a trio of 3-pointers in a 14-2 run to regain a double-digit advantage, 60-50.
With 7:31 left and Farmingdale State ahead 68-60, back-to-back layups by freshmen forwards Enike Anyia (Los Angeles, Cali.) and Isaiah Pean (Spring Valley, N.Y.) cut the Gryphons deficit to just four points. FSC answered with a 3-point play by senior guard Liam Monaghan (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) and a Riefenstahl layup to go up by nine, 73-64, with 5:07 remaining.
The Rams would hold at least a six point lead the rest of the way as they earned the Skyline Conference victory 85-77.
Riefenstahl shot an impressive 11-for-14 from the field in the win, while Graham, Monaghan and sophomore guard Anthony Miller Jr. (Yonkers, N.Y.) added nine points each.
For Sarah Lawrence, Segal registered 21 points and a game-high four steals, while Anyia totaled 16 points and a team-high 13 rebounds.
FSC next hosts conference opponent Mount Saint Mary on Saturday, February 3rd at 1:00 p.m.
