Rams Drop Conference Game at St. Joe's

St. Joseph's - 73, Farmingdale State - 68


Patchogue, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State men's basketball team traveled to St. Joseph's for a Skyline Conference game and fell, 73-68, on Wednesday evening. The Rams are now 4-13 overall and 2-8 in conference play this season.

Tied 13-13 midway through the first half, a 6-0 Farmingdale State run put the Rams ahead 19-13 before the Golden Eagles (11-6, 8-2) responded with six unanswered to again tie the game at 19-19.

With 3:10 left to play in the first, a Trey Kinard (Deer Park, N.Y.) jump shot put Farmingdale State ahead one until St. Joe's closed the half with back-to-back scores to take a 28-25 lead into halftime. The Rams held the Golden Eagles to 36% shooting, including 0-for-12 from 3-point range in the first half.

After St. Joe's extended their advantage to 30-25, the Rams used a 7-2 run capped off by a Marques Underwood (Bronx, N.Y.) layup to tie the game at 32-32 with 16:46 left to play.

Leading 46-40, senior forward Sean McCarthy (Kings Park, N.Y.) scored seven straight St. Joe's points to open up their largest lead of the game, 53-40.

Farmingdale State trailed 58-50 and used back-to-back scores by sophomore forward Weldon Irvine (Queens, N.Y.) to pull within four with 3:16 remaining.

The Golden Eagles were able to connect on 13-of-16 free-throws down the stretch as they held on for the 73-68 victory.

Junior guard Ruben Terrero (Brentwood, N.Y.) scored 16 points and added seven rebounds, while Irvine finished with 14 points and nine boards. Underwood recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Rams.

St. Joe's was led by McCarthy who tallied a game-high 26 points on 7-of-13 shooting while also going a perfect 11-for-11 from the free-throw line.

Farmingdale State next will travel to Maritime for a Skyline Conference game on Saturday, January 31st at 1:00 p.m.
