Rams Hold Off Yeshiva on Senior Night

The Farmingdale State men's basketball team defeated Yeshiva University, 68-61, on senior night this evening in Farmingdale, N.Y. Seniors Ryan Davis (Flushing, N.Y.), Leo Esonwune (Lagos, Nigeria), AJ Matthews (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Christian Nunez (White Plains, N.Y.) were honored as they played in their final regular-season home game.

In the first, neither team led by more than four points and the Rams held a three point advantage with 1:59 on the clock. Yeshiva tied the game at 29-29 with under a minute remaining and the score was deadlocked at the halftime break.

Tied 49-49 with 6:12 remaining in regulation, Farmingdale State scored seven straight points, capped off by a Nunez three pointer. Yeshiva's Dovie Hoffman (Tarzana, Calif.) responded with a three to cut the Rams lead to four, 56-52. Six more unanswered points put the game out of reach to secure the Farmingdale State conference victory.

Matthews scored a game-high 28 points and had 12 rebounds, four steals and three blocks, while Nunez added 11 points. Davis scored nine points and added three steals. Esonwune had six points and four steals.

For Yeshiva, junior center Shlomo Weissberg (Skokie, Ill.) finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while senior forward Gil Bash (Tel Aviv, Israel) totaled 14 points and 10 assists. Hoffman was the third player in double figures with 11 points. As a team, they shot 53-percent from behind the arc in the loss.

Farmingdale State will close out the regular season as they travel to Mount Saint Mary College on Saturday, February 16th at 3:00 p.m.
