Rams Advance to Championship with Win Over Valley Forge

Huntingdon, Pa. - The Farmingdale State men's basketball team advanced to the championship game of the 21st Annual Doc Greene Tournament with a 73-57 win over Valley Forge Christian Friday night. The Rams improved to 5-2 on the season, while the Patriots fell to 7-3.

Farmingdale State jumped out to a 39-27 halftime lead as they were led by senior forward AJ Matthews (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who had a first half double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds and senior guard Ryan Davis (Flushing, N.Y.) who added 13 points.

The Rams started the second half on a 7-0 run after a pair of Matthews baskets and a Leo Esonwune (Lagos, Nigeria) jump shot to extend the lead to 46-27. Valley Forge would cut the deficit to 56-42 with 9:34 remaining, but a quick 6-0 Rams' run capped off by two Davis layups brought the lead back to 20.

With the victory, Farmingdale State will face host school Juniata in the championship game this afternoon at 4:00 p.m.

Matthews led all scorers with 29 points, 25 rebounds and six blocks, while Davis had 19 points and three assists. Esonwune tallied 12 points and six boards in the win.

Sophomore guard Kevin Mack (Philadelphia, Penn.) had a team-high 19 points, while sophomore guard Jean LeBlanc (Coatsville, Penn.) scored 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting.
