Downingtown, Penn. - The Farmingdale State men's golf team posted scores of 305 and 304 for a 36-hole total of 609 at the first day of the 2017 Montgomery Cup at Downingtown Country Club.
The format consists on nine teams competing over 36-holes of stroke play on Saturday. The top-4 schools advance to match play on Sunday morning with the two winners squaring off in the championship match Sunday afternoon.
In today's morning round, FSC was led by sophomore Gary Cohan (Kings Park, N.Y.) who carded a career-best 1-under par 71. Cohan was 4-over through the first six holes and played the final 12 at 5-under after recording five birdies. Junior Chris Fischer (Mineola, N.Y.) posted a 76, while junior Jack Truncale (Nesconset, N.Y.) shot 78 in the first round. York (PA) held the lead after the first 18 with a team total of 292 and Franklin & Marshall was in second place, four strokes back.
Junior Patrick O'Halloran (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) followed his opening round of 80 with a 1-over par 73 on the final 18 for FSC. Senior Andrew Goldman (Hauppauge, N.Y.) shot a 76 in the afternoon, while Cohan posted a round two score of 76 - he shot 42 on the front nine and rebounded with a 2-under par 34 on the back. Truncale pitched in with a 79 on the second 18.
Farmingdale State has earned the #4 seed heading into match play tomorrow and will face #1 Franklin & Marshall. The other match will feature #2 York (PA)/#3 Lynchburg College with play beginning at 7:30 a.m. The Championship match will begin 30 minutes after completion of the quarterfinals.
