Swarthmore, Penn. - Knotted at 0-0 with 46 seconds left to play, Swarthmore College junior forward Lizzie King (Swarthmore, Penn.) headed in the game-winning goal to lead the Garnet over Farmingdale State, 1-0. The FSC women's soccer team dropped to 7-5-2 overall, while Swarthmore improved to 9-3.
In a scoreless first half, the Garnet out shot the Rams, 12-3, and held a slight 3-2 corner kick advantage.
Over the first 20 minutes of the second half, the Rams had the only shot on goal, which was saved by Swarthmore goalie Chantal Reyes (Portland, Ore.).
In the 80th minute, the Garnet had an opportunity to go ahead as they were fouled in the box to draw a penalty kick. Senior midfielder Seneca Kinn-Gurzo (Manasquan, N.J.) took the shot but her attempt sailed high over the crossbar as the game remained 0-0.
At 89:14, Kinn-Gurzo sent a long throw-in into the middle of the box for King who scored the game-winner on a header to secure the 1-0 non-conference victory.
Senior goalkeeper Daniella Ford (Elmont, N.Y.) stopped three shots for FSC, while Reyes made four saves in the shutout and improved to 9-1 on the season.
Farmingdale State next returns to Skyline Conference action when they host Maritime College on Wednesday, October 16th at 4:00 p.m.
