Rams Fall in First Round of NCAA's

Oneonta State - 1, Farmingdale State - 0

Geneva, N.Y. - Sophomore Jessica Lyden scored in the 62nd minute lifting SUNY Oneonta to a 1-0 victory over Farmingdale State in today's NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship first round match played at William Smith Colleges' Cozzens Field. The Red Dragons advance to the second round where they will meet third-ranked William Smith, a 5-0 winner over Cabrini this morning, at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 17th.

Oneonta (13-4-3) enjoyed a distinct advantage on corner kicks, 11-3, and notched the only goal on one of those plays. Senior Amanda Regensburger served the ball from the corner and Rams sophomore goalie Breanna Blair (Littleton, Colo.) punched the ball out of traffic, but the rebound landed right at the feet of Lyden, who blasted it home for her sixth goal of the season.

Shots were fairly even in the first half, 5-3 in favor of Oneonta, but the Red Dragons asserted themselves in the second half, earning a 7-2 advantage. While the two teams combined to put five shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes, none were a serious scoring threat.

The Rams (13-10) had their best scoring chance thwarted by the combination of sophomore goalie Rori Stark and the crossbar. In the 88th minute, junior Mary Armstrong (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) broke in for a tough angle try against Stark. Armstrong's shot, if left untouched, would have been a top shelf goal, but Stark got just enough of her hand on the strike to push it up into the crossbar and her defense cleared the ball.

Stark improved to 5-1-3 on the year with four saves. Blair made seven saves and ends the season with a 10-7 record.
