Wohner Leads #1 Merchant Marine Past Farmingdale State in Skyline Final

Kings Point, N.Y. - #2 Farmingdale State fell to top-seeded Merchant Marine, 15-2, in the Skyline Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship Final this afternoon in Kings Point, N.Y. The Mariners have claimed the title for the third time in the last four years and remain undefeated this season against conference opponents at 9-0. Senior attack Jessie Wohner (Norfolk, Va.) recorded 8 points (7g, 1a) for USMMA and is averaging 8.67 points per game this season, currently a top-10 all-time NCAA Division III record.

Merchant Marine outscored FSC, 4-0, in the first 15 minutes, using goals from Wohner (2), junior midfielder Jaqui Sheedy (Baltimore, Md.) and junior attack Julia Coughlin (Rockville Centre, N.Y.).

The Rams (9-8) got on the board just over a minute into the second quarter on a goal from junior attack Marina Zumbrunn (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), assisted by sophomore attack Nicole Pontecorvo (Lindenhurst, N.Y.).

Over the final 12:41 of the second, the Mariners scored four unanswered goals, including three from Wohner, to take an 8-1 advantage into the halftime break.

FSC junior attack Jasmin Brown (Shirley, N.Y.) opened the scoring in the third quarter to cut their deficit to six, but USMMA answered with five straight scores to extend their lead to 13-2 heading into the fourth.

The Mariners added a pair of goals in the final 15 minutes as they went on for the 15-2 win. 

Sophomore goalkeeper Ronnie Reilly (Oceanside, N.Y.) tallied 15 saves for Farmingdale State, while senior defender Anna Zaborowska (East Patchogue, N.Y.) recorded four caused turnovers, five ground balls and four draw control in the loss.

Along with her eight points, Wohner produced a game-high seven caused turnovers.

Merchant Marine has earned the Skyline's automatic bid into the 2022 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship.
