Rams Capture Skyline Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship

#1 Farmingdale State - 11, #3 Merchant Marine - 10


Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's lacrosse team captured the Skyline Conference Championship this afternoon as they defeated #3 Merchant Marine, 11-10. The top-seeded Rams remain undefeated at 8-0 and have claimed the conference's automatic bid to the upcoming 2021 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship.

FSC took an early 1-0 advantage after senior midfielder Sam Shelton (Holtsville, N.Y.) notched a free-position goal.

The Mariners responded with four stright goals, including two from freshman midfielder Reagan Jetter (La Jolla, Calif.), to go in front, 4-1.

With 12:07 on the clock, sophomore attack Athena Vogiatzis (Holtsville, N.Y.) scored off the pass from junior attack Deanna Iannotta (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Just 1:33 later, Vogiatzis registered a man-down goal to close within one. 

With 8:21 left in the first half, senior attack Courtney Gendels (Wantagh, N.Y.) set up Iannotta for a goal before scoring one of her own only 15 seconds later as Farmingdale State took a 5-4 lead.

Merchant Marine sophomore midfielder Jenna Turrentine (Kennesaw, Ga.) and Gendels traded goals in the final 7:33 as the Rams held a 7-6 advantage at halftime.

After Vogiatzis opened the scoring in the second half with a free-position goal, the Mariners tallied three unanswered goals to go in front, 9-8.

With 7:23 left, Vogiatzis recorded a goal from sophomore attack Julia Tuohy (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) to tie the game at 9-9.

After the draw control win by Merchant Marine, FSC sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Perrini (Holbrook, N.Y.) forced a turnover with 6:12 remaining. Just 22 seconds later, Gendels tallied an unassisted goal to give the Rams a 10-9 advantage.

The Mariners would win the draw and quickly score to tie the game at 10-10 with 4:55 left to play.

With 1:39 remaining, FSC freshman midfielder Ashley Codispoti (Patchogue, N.Y.) tallied the game-winning goal off the feed from Gendels to give the Rams an 11-10 lead.

Junior midfielder Danielle Hall (Levittown, N.Y.) won the ensuing draw control which allowed Farmingdale State to run out the clock as they secured the 11-10 championshp victory.

Gendels and Vogiatzis led the way offensively as they both had four goals apiece. Tuohy notched three assists, while Iannotta recorded one goal and one assist for two points. Shelton tallied a goal, seven draw control, one ground ball and one caused turnover and Hall registered four draw control and two ground balls.

Perrini was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2021 Skyline Championship after stopping nine shots in the victory.

The Rams will now await their opponent and location for the 2021 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship. The women's lacrosse selection show will air on the home page of NCAA.com on Monday, May 3rd at 10:30 a.m. 

Farmingdale State last appeared in the NCAA's in 2017, when they defeated Endicott in the First Round before falling to TCNJ in the Second.
