Rams Clinch Perfect 6-0 Regular Season; Will Enter Playoffs as #1 Seed

Purchase, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's lacrosse team clinched a perfect 6-0 regular season and will enter the Skyline Conference playoffs as the #1 seed after defeating Manhattanville College, 19-8, this afternoon. 

The Valiants (2-3) got on the board first with an unassisted goal by junior midfielder Lara Keenan (Montgomery, N.Y.) just 3:32 in.

The Rams quickly responded with goals by sophomore attack Athena Vogiatzis (Holtsville, N.Y.) and senior midfielder Sam Shelton (Holtsville, N.Y.), both assisted by senior attack Courtney Gendels (Wantagh, N.Y.), to take a 2-1 advantage with 22:02 on the clock.

Just 35 seconds later, Gendels scored on a free-position shot to go up, 3-1.

The Rams led 5-1 and used back-to-back man-down goals from Gendels to take a 7-1 advantage.

With 12:32 left in the first half, Manhattanville tallied two goals in just 11 seconds to close within four at 7-3.

FSC would outscore the Valiants, 5-1, over the final 10 minutes as they took a 12-4 lead at the break. Gendels (2), Shelton, Vogiatzis and freshman midfielder Ashley Codispoti (Patchogue, N.Y.) each recorded goals.

Gendels opened the scoring in the second half, off the feed from sophomore attack Julia Tuohy (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.), before Shelton registered a free-position goal to give Farmingdale State a commanding 14-4 lead.

After Manhattanville cut their deficit to nine, 15-6, sophomore midfielder Kristen Shine (Manorville, N.Y.) set up junior attack Deanna Iannotta (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) for a goal to regain the 10-goal advantage.

Vogiatzis followed with a goal from Tuohy to give the Rams their largest lead of the game at 17-6.

Each team scored two goals over the final 15 minutes as Farmingdale State went on for the 19-8 victory.

Gendels finished with eight goals and two assists for a game-high 10 points. Her eight goals ranks second all-time for a single game and the two man-down scores tied the school record. Vogiatzis recorded four goals and one assist, Shelton had three goals and Tuohy tallied a game-high five assists. Codispoti and Iannotta notched two goals and one assist apiece, while Shine had two assists, seven draw control, three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

FSC sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Perrini (Holbrook, N.Y.) stopped a season-high 13 shots in the win. The Rams defense held the Valiants to just 1-of-16 shooting on free-position shots.

Farmingdale State next will host the Skyline Conference semifinals on Wednesday, April 28th.
