Second Half Rally Leads FSC Past St. Joseph's-LI

Farmingdale, N.Y. - Trailing 5-3 early in the second half, Farmingdale State rallied and earned the 9-6 Skyline Conference win at St. Joseph's-Long Island this afternoon. With the victory, the Rams improved to 3-0, while the Golden Eagles fell to 1-1.

Trailing 2-0 in the opening minutes, FSC senior attack Courtney Gendels (Wantagh, N.Y.) cut the St. Joseph's-LI lead in half with an unassisted goal.

With 17:01 left to play in the first half, the Golden Eagles went back ahead by two, 3-1, as senior midfielder Tori Staker (Coram, N.Y.) tallied an unassisted score.

The Rams again cut with deficit to one with under seven minutes remaining on a goal from junior midfielder Danielle Hall (Levittown, N.Y.). Less than a minute later, Gendels netted the pass from junior attack Deanna Iannotta (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) to tie the game at 3-3. Neither team would score over the final five minutes of the first half as they headed into the break even at 3-3.

Staker opened the second half with back-to-back goals to quickly put SJC-LI in front, 5-3. Farmingdale State responded with two consecutive goals by sophomore attack Athena Vogiatzis (Holtsville, N.Y.) and freshman midfielder Ashley Codispoti (Patchogue, N.Y.) to even the score at 5-5 with 18:36 on the clock.

Vogiatzis and Codispoti again recorded back-to-back FSC goals to give the Rams a 7-5 advantage with 11:15 left to play.

After Vogiatzis' scored for third time on the day, freshman midfielder Alexa Cordingly (Lake Grove, N.Y.) added a goal for SJC-LI to cut the deficit to 8-6.

Gendels notched the final goal of the game with 1:37 on the clock as the Rams earned the 9-6 victory.

Gendels and Vogiatzis each scored three goals, while Codispoti had two goals and caused two turnovers.

For St. Joe's-LI, Staker led the way with a game-high four goals, one assist, five ground balls and three caused turnovers.

FSC sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Perrini (Holbrook, N.Y.) stopped six shots, while junior Jillian Hummel (East Patchogue, N.Y.) had 10 saves for the Golden Eagles.

The Rams next travel to Mount Saint Mary College for a Skyline Conference game on Friday, April 9th at 7:00 p.m.
