Gendels Scores Six Goals in Win at Merchant Marine

Farmingdale State - 12, Merchant Marine - 10


Kings Point, N.Y. - Senior attack Courtney Gendels (Wantagh, N.Y.) scored a game-high six goals as the FSC women's lacrosse team earned a 12-10 Skyline Conference victory at Merchant Marine this evening.

After the Mariners jumped out to a 2-0 lead, Gendels scored off the pass from freshman midfielder Ashley Codispoti (Patchogue, N.Y.) to cut the deficit in half with 17:21 left in the first. Less than six minutes later, Gendels netted junior attack Deanna Iannotta's (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) pass to even the score at 2-2.

USMMA (0-1) sophomore midfielder Phoebe Cho (Fairfax, Va.) recorded an unassisted goal with 11:19 remaining to put the Mariners back in front, 3-2. Gendels and sophomore attack Athena Vogiatzis (Holtsville, N.Y.) answered with back-to-back Farmingdale State (2-0) goals to give the Rams their first lead of the game, 4-3.

Tied 4-4 with 1:57 left to play, Gendels scored her fourth goal of the night off the pass by sophomore attack Julia Tuohy (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) to give FSC a one-goal edge heading into halftime.

Only 31 seconds after the break, Gendels notched a free-position score to increase the Rams' lead to 6-4. Merchant Marine quickly scored a pair of unassisted goals to tie the game at 6-6 with 26:55 remaining. Junior midfielder Danielle Hall (Levittown, N.Y.) followed with a free-position goal to once again put Farmingdale State back on top by one.

Leading 8-7 with 7:59 on the clock, Vogiatzis sent home the Deanna Iannotta (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) pass to increase the advantage to 9-7.

After trading goals, FSC went up by three, 11-8, on a score by sophomore midfielder Kristen Shine (Manorville, N.Y.) with 3:00 remaining. A Sam Shelton (Holtsville, N.Y.) goal 56 seconds later, gave the Rams a four-goal lead and put the game out of reach.

Merchant Marine added two late scores as Farmingdale State went on for the 12-10 victory.

Gendels finished the night with seven points on six goals and one assist, while Vogiatzis and Hall scored twice. Tuohy and Iannotta each tallied a game-high three assists for FSC.

For the Mariners, freshman midfielder Reagan Jetter (La Jolla, Calif.) notched a game-high six goals and sophomore midfielder Jaqui Sheedy (Baltimore, Md.) added a pair of goals and 10 draw controls.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Perrini (Holbrook, N.Y.) had 11 saves for FSC, while sophomore Hope Germanakos (Lynbrook, N.Y.) stopped 10 shots for USMMA.

Farmingdale State next will travel to St. Joseph's-Long Island for a conference game on Saturday, April 3rd at 12:30 p.m.
