Rams Fall at Merchant Marine in Skyline Finals

#1 Merchant Marine - 22, #2 Farmingdale State - 5


Kings Point, N.Y. - The second-seeded Farmingdale State women's lacrosse team traveled to #1 Merchant Marine this afternoon for the Skyline Conference Finals and fell, 22-5. The Mariners, who are a perfect 17-0 on the year, earned the conference's automatic bid into the 2019 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship.

Trailing 2-0, the Rams used an unassisted goal by junior midfielder Courtney Gendels (Wantagh, N.Y.) and a free-position score from freshman midfielder Skylar Steinberg (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) to tie the game with 26:19 on the clock.

Over the next 5:08, Merchant Marine recorded three goals by Grace McHugh (Sturbridge, Mass.), all of which were assisted by Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) and a pair of goals from Jessie Wohner (Norfolk, Va.) to go out in front, 7-2. The Mariners followed with seven unanswered goals until an unassisted score by FSC's Haley Perez (Smithtown, N.Y.) ended the run with 2:41 on the clock. Merchant Marine added the final goal of the half and went into the break leading, 15-3. In the first half, USMMA out shot Farmingdale State 25-13 and held an 11-4 ground ball advantage.

After Willard opened the second half with three straight scores to extend the lead to 18-3, Jessica Reilly (Sayville, N.Y.) and Wohner followed with scores to give the Mariners a 17-goal advantage with 16:13 remaining.

Each team would score twice the remainder of the way as USMMA went on for the 22-5 victory.

Five different players notched one goal for the Rams, while Williard tallied a game-high nine points on five goals and four assists for the Mariners. Reilly added six points on five goals and one assist and Wohner ended the day with five goals.

Farmingdale State finished the season with an 8-11 record.
