Strong Second Half Leads FSC Past Maritime

Throggs Neck, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's lacrosse team trailed Maritime by one at the break but outscored the Privateers 8-4 in the second half en route to the 10-7 Skyline Conference road victory on Tuesday night.

Trailing 3-0 with 6:15 left in the first half, FSC (5-10, 4-1) sophomore midfielder Danielle Hall (Levittown, N.Y.) scored off the pass from Jessica Spina (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) to cut the deficit to two. Only 22 seconds later, junior midfielder Courtney Gendels (Wantagh, N.Y.) connected off the feed by Kristen Shine (Manorville, N.Y.) for the final goal of the half as FSC went into the break down, 3-2. In an evenly matched first half, the Privateers (6-5, 2-3) outshot the Rams 13-11 and held a 4-1 draw control advantage.

After senior midfielder Alexandra Sparrow (Levittown, N.Y.) opened the second with a free-position goal, Gendels and sophomore attack Deanna Iannotta (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) recorded scores to put Farmingdale State on top, 5-3, with 26:22 remaining. Maritime followed with two straight goals to even the game at 5-5 before Gendels responded with back-to-back scores to bring the FSC lead to two with 18:14 on the clock.

Leading 8-5, freshman midfielder Skylar Steinberg (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) scored on a free-position attempt to put the Rams out in front by four.

With 6:42 left to play, Maritime's Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y.) tallied an unassisted goal to cut the deficit to 9-6. After sophomore midfielder MacKenzie Fabiani (Bayport, N.Y.) scored to pull the Privateers within two, FSC's Haley Perez (Smithtown, N.Y.) notched the final goal of the game with 3:23 remaining as Farmingdale State earned the 10-7 road victory.

Gendels scored a game-high four goals and picked up two ground balls, while Perez added two goals and a pair of ground balls. Spina finished the night with game-high three assists and Shine had two assists and three draw controls.

For Maritime, Wright and senior attack Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y.) each totaled three points on two goals and one assist.

Farmingdale State freshman goalkeeper Emily Rodier (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) recorded nine saves, while junior Esmeralda Hernandez (Huntington, N.Y.) stopped 17 shots for Maritime.

The FSC women's lacrosse team next will host Mount Saint Vincent in a Skyline Conference game for senior night on Tuesday, April 23rd at 7:00 p.m.
