Gendels Reaches Milestone in Win Over St. Joe's-LI

Farmingdale, N.Y. - Junior midfielder Courtney Gendels (Wantagh, N.Y.) scored her 100th career goal this afternoon as the Farmingdale State women's lacrosse team earned a 14-12 victory over St. Joseph's-LI. With the win, the Rams improved to 4-10 overall and 3-1 in the Skyline Conference, while the Golden Eagles fell to 6-4, 4-1.

Trailing 3-1 with 22:04 left on the clock, SJC-LI used an unassisted score from sophomore midfielder Tori Staker (Coram, N.Y.) to cut the deficit to one. Only 47 seconds later, FSC regained a two-goal advantage on Gendels' 100th career goal.

After a free-position goal by senior midfielder Alexandra Sparrow (Levittown, N.Y.), Gendels followed with an unassisted score to put the Rams on top, 6-2, with 16:58 remaining in the first half. The Golden Eagles quickly answered with three straight goals, including man-up free-position scores by Nicole Stoppelli (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and Staker, to close within one.

Farmingdale State took a 7-6 edge into the break after outshooting SJC-LI, 16-7, in the first half.

Tied 9-9 with 14:54 on the clock, FSC scored five unanswered times capped off by back-to-back Gendels goals off feeds from junior midfielder Sam Shelton (Holtsville, N.Y.).

Over the final 3:39 of the game, St. Joe's-LI tallied the final three goals but fell short, 14-12, in the Skyline Conference matchup.

Gendels notched a game-high seven goals to go along with one assist and three caused turnovers, while Sparrow (2G, 1A) and Shelton (1G, 2A) each had three points and caused three turnovers. Freshman goalkeeper Iyana Hudson (Brentwood, N.Y.) stopped six shots in the victory for Farmingdale State.

Staker led the way for the Golden Eagles with six goals and a game-high 10 draw controls and Stopelli recorded six points on three goals and three assists.

FSC next will travel to Maritime for a Skyline Conference game on Tuesday, April 16th at 7:00 p.m.
