Strong First Half Leads FSC Past MSMC

Farmingdale State - 16, Mount Saint Mary - 5


Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's lacrosse team defeated conference opponent Mount Saint Mary, 16-5, this afternoon in Farmingdale, N.Y. FSC outscored the Knights 12-1 in the first half en route to the Skyline victory. The Rams (2-10) improved to 1-1 in conference play, while MSMC (0-8) dropped to 0-2.

Over the first 10 minutes of the game, the Rams jumped out to a 7-0 advantage. Junior midfielder Courtney Gendels (Wantagh, N.Y.) registered the first two goals just two minutes in before junior midfielder Sam Shelton (Holtsville, N.Y.) tallied an unassisted goal to put the Rams ahead by three. Freshman attack Kristen Shine (Manorville, N.Y.) followed with back-to-back goals to go up, 5-0, and both Gendels and sophomore midfielder Haley Perez (Smithtown, N.Y.) used scores to give Farmingdale State the seven-goal advantage.

With 15:17 remaining in the half, Shelton and midfielders Alexandra Sparrow (Levittown, N.Y.) and Danielle Hall (Levittown, N.Y.) each scored within a three-minute span to put FSC in front by 10.

Farmingdale State led 12-1 at the break as they held a 21-2 shot advantage and picked up 13 ground balls to Mount Saint Mary's four.

In an evenly played second half, each team recorded four goals. After the Knights scored to open the half, FSC produced four straight goals to go in front 16-2. Sparrow scored off the feed from Spina before the Rams tallied a pair of free-position goals from Gendels and freshman defender Hayley Kirby (West Islip, N.Y.). Kirby registered FSC's final goal of the game, unassisted at 12:09, as Farmingdale State went on for the 16-5 victory.

Gendels led the way for FSC with a game-high five goals, while Shelton, Sparrow, Shine and Kirby had two goals apiece. Hall and Perez each finished with one goal and one assist and both Spina and sophomore attack Deanna Iannotta (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) added two assists in the win. 

For the Knights, sophomore attack Alyssa DiMare (Staten Island, N.Y.) had a team-high three goals.

The FSC women's lacrosse team next hosts Skyline opponent Purchase College on Tuesday, April 9th at 4:00 p.m.
