Western Conn. St. - 12, Farmingdale State - 10
Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's lacrosse team hosted Western Connecticut State this afternoon for a non-conference game and lost, 12-10. FSC fell to 1-7 overall, while the Colonials improved to 5-1 on the season.
Over the first 18:01 of the game, Western Connecticut took a 6-1 lead. Junior midfielder Brooke Baldelli (New Fairfield, Conn.) and sophomore midfielder Caroline Galligan (Marshfield, Mass.) each tallied two goals during the run.
FSC cut the deficit to 6-3 with a pair of goals over the next five minutes. Freshman midfielder Skylar Steinberg (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) recorded an unassisted goal before junior midfielder Courtney Gendels (Wantagh, N.Y.) scored off the feed from senior attack Jessica Spina (Lindenhurst, N.Y.).
The Colonials would respond with three unanswered goals to take a 9-3 advantage.
In the final 2:58 of the half, Gendels and sophomore midfielders Haley Perez (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Danielle Hall (Levittown, N.Y.) all scored to close within three, 9-6, at the break.
Western Connecticut opened the second half with three straight goals to take a 12-6 advantage.
With 11:16 remaining, Gendels netted a free-position, man-up goal and just over six minutes later junior midfielder Sam Shelton (Holtsville, N.Y.) registered a man-down goal to cut the deficit to 12-8. Gendels and Steinberg followed with back-to-back unassisted scores to close within just two, 12-10, with 2:47 remaining.
FSC won the ensuing draw control before Spina sent a shot just wide of the net with 1:28 left. Western Connecticut would pick up the ground ball and run the clock out as they earned the 12-10 non-conference victory.
Gendels led the way for Farmingdale State with a game-high five goals on eight shots. Steinberg had two goals, while Shelton recorded a goal, one assist and six draw control. Spina tallied three assists in the loss.
For the Colonials, senior midfielder Lauren Bradshaw (Bethel, Conn.) produced seven points (3g, 4a), five ground balls, four draw control, and three caused turnovers, while Baldelli finished with five points (3g, 2a), four ground balls, four caused turnovers, and three draw control.
The Rams next travel to Scranton for a non-conference game on Wednesday, March 27th at 4:00 p.m.
