Farmingdale, N.Y. - Marywood University junior midfielder Gwyneth Gleason (Vestal, N.Y.) scored seven times to lead the Pacers over Farmingdale State, 11-6, in today's non-conference game. The FSC women's lacrosse team fell in their season opener and stand at 0-1 overall.
Marywood (1-0) struck first in the eighth minute when Gleason scored on a free-position shot.
The game remained 1-0 until Pacers' junior midfielder Gina Babcock (Fulton, N.Y.) made it 2-0 with 12:01 left in the first half.
Trailing 3-0, Rams junior midfielder Courtney Gendels (Wantagh, N.Y.) set up sophomore midfielder Haley Perez (Smithtown, N.Y.) for a goal before Gendels scored off the feed from freshman attack Kristen Shine (Manorville, N.Y.) to close within one, 3-2.
After Gleason tallied her third score of the game, Gendels registered a goal from senior attack Jessica Spina (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) to cut their deficit to 4-3.
With 37 seconds left in the first half, Babcock registered an unassisted goal to give Marywood a 5-3 lead at the break.
Over the first 2:38 of the second half, FSC used a 2-1 run, including goals from senior midfielder Alexandra Sparrow (Levittown, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Sam Shelton (Holtsville, N.Y.), to close within one at 6-5.
The Pacers answered with five straight goals, including four from Gleason, over the next 16:15 to take a commanding 11-5 advantage. Marywood would go on for the 11-6 road win.
Gendels led the way for Farmingdale State as she recorded a team-high two goals and three assists. Perez, Sparrow, Shelton and freshman midfielder Skylar Steinberg (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) each tallied one goal for the Rams in the loss.
Along with her seven goals, Gleason produced a game-high six caused turnovers and four ground balls. Babcock tallied two goals, three ground balls and one caused turnover, while junior attack Zoe Simeone (Lynbrook, N.Y.) had one goal, four caused turnovers and three ground balls.
In goal, FSC freshman Iyana Hudson (Brentwood, N.Y.) stopped 10 shots, while Pacers' junior Mary Leahy (Goshen, N.Y.) made seven saves in the victory.
The Rams next travel to play non-conference opponent Oneonta on Friday, March 1st at 3:00 p.m.
