Farmingdale State - 19, Mount Saint Mary - 9
Newburgh, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's lacrosse team trailed 6-5 at the break and outscored Mount Saint Mary 14-3 in the second half to capture their first conference win of the season, 19-9. FSC improved to 2-8 overall and 1-1 in the Skyline with five conference games remaining.
The Knights (5-5, 2-1 Skyline) took a 3-1 lead through the first 10:32 of the game before Rams freshman attack Julia Tuohy (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) set up senior midfielder Samantha Morra (Levittown, N.Y.) for a goal to cut the deficit to one. Mount Saint Mary answered with back-to-back goals to open up a 5-2 advantage with 9:17 remaining in the first half.
Two minutes later, freshman midfielder Haley Perez (Smithtown, N.Y.) scored off the feed from Tuohy before sophomore midfielder Courtney Gendels (Wantagh, N.Y.) tallied a free-position goal to close within one, 5-4.
Each team registered a goal over the final 5:14 as Mount Saint Mary led 6-5 at the half.
FSC tied the score early in the second on a man-down goal from Gendels. With 22:32 remaining, the Rams would tally four goals in just over four minutes to go ahead 10-6. Sophomore attack Sam Shelton (Holtsville, N.Y.), junior attack Jessica Spina (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), junior midfielder Alexandra Sparrow and Tuohy each recorded a goal during the span.
After the Knights recorded a pair of goals to cut the deficit to 10-8, Farmingdale State responded with six straight goals, including two from both Ingrassia and Shelton, to take a commanding 16-8 lead.
MSMC senior midfielder Christina Ryan (Franklin Square, N.Y.) registered an unassisted goal with 6:09 left, but a score by Ingrassia just 19 seconds later regained an FSC eight-goal advantage. Tuohy and Gendels would score the final two goals of the game as Farmingdale State earned the Skyline Conference victory, 19-9.
Gendels led the way for FSC as she tallied career-highs with six goals, six ground balls and five caused turnovers, while Tuohy recorded a career-high eight points, on three goals and five assists. Ingrassia finished the night with five points (3g, 2a) and Shelton produced three goals and one assist.
Rams senior goalkeeper Jessica Meyers (Smithtown, N.Y.) recorded 10 saves as she registered her second win of the season.
For Mount Saint Mary, sophomore midfielder Liz Halpin (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) ended with three goals and a game-high eight draw controls, while Ryan and sophomore midfielder Courtney Condron (Franklin Square, N.Y.) each scored twice.
The Rams next will travel to Skyline opponent Purchase College on Friday, April 13th at 4:00 p.m.
