Rams Fall to St. Joe's in Skyline Championship

#1 St. Joseph's - 7, #2 Farmingdale State - 5


Patchogue, N.Y. - The St. Joseph's women's lacrosse team captured the Skyline Championship with a 7-5 victory over Farmingdale State this afternoon. The Golden Eagles earned the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

Tied 1-1 with 23:28 remaining, the Rams (10-7) took a 2-1 lead on a goal by junior midfielder Kristen Ronaldo (Commack, N.Y.) off the pass from Nicole Marzocca* (North Babylon, N.Y.).

After St. Joe's (13-4) evened the score at 2-2, a free position goal by junior midfielder Heather Ferchland (Seldon, N.Y.) gave the Golden Eagles a 3-2 advantage with 20:22 left in the first half.

Trailing 4-2 with 2:37 left in the half, Farmingdale State senior midfielder Christy Thoden* (Bayport, N.Y.) scored to cut the deficit to one. Thoden followed with a free position goal only 35 seconds later to tie the game at 4-4 heading into the break.

St. Joseph's scored three unanswered goals to start the second half to open up a 7-4 advantage with 10:39 left to play. 

Senior attack Kelly Geheran (Sayville, N.Y.) added the final score of the game with 6:44 remaining as Farmingdale State fell, 7-5.

Thoden finished with a game-high three goals and added three draw controls, while Marzocca tallied two assists and four draws. Sophomore goalkeeper Krista Spagnoletta (West Islip, N.Y.) had nine saves in the loss for the Rams. The Golden Eagles were led by Ferchland, Kristin Carroll (Patchogue, N.Y.) and Caitlynn Webber (Eastport, N.Y.) who each had three goals. Sophomore Courtney Wickline (Medford, N.Y.) stopped five shots and was tabbed the Most Outstanding Player for the tournament.
