Rams Fall in OT at Stevens

Stevens - 14, Farmingdale State - 12 (F/OT)

Hoboken, N.J. - Freshman Julianna Ricci scored 2:07 into the first overtime period and led the Stevens women's lacrosse team to a 14-12 overtime non-conference win over Farmingdale State (8-6) on Wednesday afternoon.

The Rams scored the first two goals of the game as senior midfielder Nicole Marzocca* (North Babylon, N.Y.) and senior attack Jackie Kennedy (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) scored in the first 6:46 of the contest. Stevens would then go to score the next three markers as junior Erika Wilcox, sophomore Kathleen Kalbian and senior Caitlyn Hughes scored within a four minute span to give the Ducks the lead back, 3-2. After trading the next four goals, Marzocca recorded three goals over the final eight minutes of the period to give Farmingdale State a 7-6 halftime edge.

Farmingdale started the second half pouring in three goals in the opening 7:13, with senior midfielder Alyssa Handel (Medford, N.Y.), Kennedy and sophomore midfielder Brittany Rosino (North Babylon, N.Y.) each recording a goal. Stevens countered back with the next three tallies, including goals by sophomore Caroline DeLuca, sophomore Mariel Haubrich and freshman Cami Santor. Kelly Geheran re-established the Rams two goal lead with 13:43 left, but Wilcox notched her fourth of the contest with 9:03 left for an 11-10 FSC advantage.

Handel scored her second of the match with a little over a minute remaining for a 12-10 Farmingdale State lead, before Stevens made their comeback. The Ducks actually lost the ensuing draw, but a turnover was scooped up by Ricci. After a successful clear, Wilcox recovered the rebound of a missed shot and deposited her fifth of the day into the back of the cage, cutting the Stevens deficit to 12-11. Santor won a crucial draw control, and Wilcox knotted the game-tying goal with 16 seconds remaining on the clock to force overtime.

Ricci took the feed from DeLuca to give Stevens a 13-12 lead with 53 seconds remaining in the first half of a six-minute overtime. Santor corralled the draw control to start the second half of the OT period, and the hosts were able to control play. With the Rams pressing, Santor found a wide open DeLuca with one second left to add an insurance goal.

Marzocca had four goals and four draw controls, while Handel and Kennedy recorded multiple goal games. Sophomore goalkeeper Krista Spagnoletta (West Islip, N.Y.) posted a season-high 19 saves in defeat.

Farmingdale State will closeout the regular season on Saturday, April 25th with a conference game against Purchase College. The game will feature Senior Day for our seven seniors: Mary Armstrong, Kelly Geheran, Alyssa Handel, Jackie Kennedy, Nicole Marzocca, Christy Thoden* and Emily Wolff.
