Rams Hold Off Oneonta for Non-Conference Win

Oneonta, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's lacrosse team earned their first win of the season as they defeated Oneonta State, 13-11, in a non-conference game on Saturday afternoon.

Tied 7-7 with 4:36 remaining in the first half, Farmingdale State regained the lead on a goal by senior midfielder Christy Thoden* (Bayport, N.Y.) off the pass from senior midfielder Nicole Marzocca* (North Babylon, N.Y.). Only 27 seconds later, senior midfielder Alyssa Handel (Medford, N.Y.) recorded her third goal of the game to put the Rams ahead, 9-7.

Farmingdale State closed the half with a goal by junior defender Kristine Minogue (Miller Place, N.Y.) to take a 10-7 lead into halftime.

The Rams opened up an 11-7 advantage only 2:08 into the second half as Thoden scored off the feed from Handel. The Red Dragons (1-5) responded with a score by senior midfielder Nikki Fioretti (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) to cut the deficit to 11-8.

Marzocca tallied back-to-back Farmingdale State goals to give the Rams their largest lead of the game, 13-8, with 18:58 left to play.

Oneonta would outscore Farmingdale State 3-0 throughout the remainder of the game but the Rams held on for the 13-11 victory.

Handel finished with a game-high six points on three goals and three assists, while Marzocca had three goals, two assists, four draw controls and caused three turnovers. Thoden recorded three goals and a game-high nine draw controls for the Rams.

The Red Dragons were led by Fioretti who scored a game-high four goals and also had three goals and one assist from freshman attack Taylor Casey (Garden City South, N.Y.).

Farmingdale State next will host Western Connecticut State University in a non-conference game on Tuesday, March 24th at 7:00 p.m.
