- Eight Players and Coach Named to 2014 All-Conference Women's Lacrosse -
New York, N.Y. - The Skyline Conference announced the 2014 All-Conference Team on Thursday, April 24th with eight players on Farmingdale State's team receiving honors, along with Coach Calkins.
Junior midfielder Christy Thoden of Farmingdale State has been named the 2014 Skyline Women's Lacrosse Player of the Year in voting conducted among the Conference's eight head coaches. The Skyline coaches also selected Jane Quinn of Maritime as Rookie of the Year and Farmingdale State's Erin Calkins as Coach of the Year.
Thoden leads the conference in draw controls per game (7.59) and broke her own school record this season with 143 draw controls to date. She ranks second in both assists (30) and points (69) and is third in caused turnovers per game (2.47). A native of Bayport, N.Y., the two-time Player of the Week selection has tallied 39 goals and compiled 58 ground balls as the Rams captured the league's regular season crown with a 7-0 record. FSC (17-1) will host St. Joseph's-L.I. on Saturday, Apr. 26, in the finals of the Skyline Championship.
Now in her second season, Calkins has guided Farmingdale State to a program-record 17 victories and a berth in the finals of the Skyline Championship. FSC will enter the finals against St. Joseph's-L.I. riding a 10-game winning streak. The Rams earned a 15-14 win over No. 15 Oneonta State on March 15 and have outscored their opponents by a 291-158 margin on the year. Calkins earned her bachelor's degree in Sport and Leisure Management from Eastern Connecticut State in
2007.
Joining Thoden on the First Team are junior midfielder Nicole Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Alyssa Handel (Medford, N.Y.). Marzocca broke the school record for points in a season (101) on Wednesday, surpassing the former school record of 95 held by Justine Rothar since 2010. She also leads the conference in points, goals (56) and assists (45). Handel is third on the team in scoring with 40 goals and 12 assists and ranks 7th in the Skyline for goals per game (2.38) and 8th for points (3.19).
Receiving Second Team honors were sophomore attack Kimberly Pepe (Levittown, N.Y.), freshman attack Brittany Rosino (North Babylon, N.Y.), sophomore defender Jacqueline LaMay (Huntington Station, N.Y.), sophomore defender Sara Rivadeneyra (Ridge, N.Y.) and freshman goalkeeper Krista Spagnoletta (West Islip, N.Y.).
Pepe ranks 2nd in the Skyline for game-winning goals with four, while also tallying 30 goals and 6 assists this year. Rosino has eight starts as a rookie and is tied for 4th most points on the team with 23 goals and 19 assists. LaMay started all 18 games on defense and has accumulated 17 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers, while taking on the opponents' top offensive threats. Rivadeneyra has appeared in 16 games and picked up 19 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers. In goal, Spagnoletta holds a .502 save percentage with 131 saves and a 14-1 record, posting 10+ saves in six games including the Rams big win over #15 Oneonta State.
