Montclair Edges Rams in Final Minutes

Montclair, N.J. - Farmingdale State lost a close game at Montclair State tonight, 15-13, in a non-conference women's lacrosse game at Sprague Field in Montclair, N.J. The Rams record now stands at 6-1 overall, while the Red Hawks improve to 7-0.

Montclair junior attack Tierney Conlon (Caldwell, N.J.) scored the opening goal 1:24 into the game, answered by Farmingdale's junior midfielder Christy Thoden (Bayport, N.Y.) a minute later for the first tie of the game. The score stayed within three the entire half in an evenly matched game with the Red Hawks leading 10-7 at the halftime break.

In the second, junior midfielder Jenna Bussiere (Dayton, N.J.) gave Montclair their biggest lead with an unassisted goal for the 11-7 advantage. Rams junior midfielder Nicole Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y.) cut the deficit to 11-8, before Conlon scored her second of the night for another four goal lead, 12-8, with 20 minutes left on the clock.

Over the next six minutes, Farmingdale State took control of the game and scored four straight, tying the game at 12-12 with 13:55 remaining. Bussiere and Marzocca traded goals again for a 13-13 game and 11:56 left. Montclair took their final lead on a sophomore attack Kara Crampton (Kinnelon, N.J.) goal at the eight minute mark and added one more as they held on for the win over the final minutes.

Marzocca led the Rams with five goals, four assists, three draws, while Thoden finished with two goals, one assist and three draws. Junior midfielder Alyssa Handel (Medford, N.Y.) and sophomore midfielder Lisa Olen (East Islip, N.Y.) each scored two, while sophomore attack Kimberly Pepe (Levittown, N.Y.) and freshman attack Brittany Rosino (North Babylon, N.Y.) had a goal each. Freshman goalkeeper Krista Spagnoletta (West Islip, N.Y.) made nine saves in defeat.

For Montclair, Bussiere led with six goals, one assist and five draw controls. Conlon totaled three goals and three assists. Senior midfielder Kelly Schoneveld (Denville, N.J.) finished with four goals and three draw controls. Sophomore goalkeeper Alexandra Tepper (Flanders, N.J.) made seven saves for the win.

Farmingdale State will open their conference schedule this weekend with a game at Purchase College on Saturday, March 22nd at 1:00 p.m.
