Farmingdale State - 18, Western Connecticut - 12


Danbury, Conn. - The Farmingdale State women's lacrosse team defeated Western Connecticut 18-12 on Wednesday afternoon, improving their record to 4-0 overall. The Colonials dropped to 1-1 with the loss.

The Rams held a 10-7 lead at the break after an evenly matched first half. Junior midfielder Christy Thoden (Bayport, N.Y.) opened the scoring just two minutes in and Farmingdale State built a 5-1 advantage over the first ten minutes. West Conn got to within one, 5-4, with three quick goals and would tie the game at 7-7 on a free position shot with 3:19 left in the first.

Junior midfielder Nicole Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y.) broke the tie with an unassisted goal at 1:55, followed by a free position shot by sophomore attack Kimberly Pepe (Levittown, N.Y.) 28 seconds later for the 9-7 lead. A Marzocca free position with 10 seconds left in the half would give the Rams the 10-7 halftime lead.

West Conn made it 10-9 with two consecutive goals to open the second half, but Farmingdale State held them to just three goals the rest of the way as they scored eight goals en route to the non-conference win.

Thoden grabbed 12 ground balls, eight draw controls and scored a team-high five goals. Marzocca also finished with a team-high five goals to add with her one assist, four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Junior midfielder Alyssa Handel (Medford, N.Y.) posted a team-high four assists and two goals. Pepe notched four goals, one assist. Sophomore midfielder Lisa Olen (East Islip, N.Y.) picked up six ground balls and five draws.

Freshman goalkeeper Krista Spagnoletta (West Islip, N.Y.) made 13 saves for the victory, while West Conn goalkeeper Karli Portnoy made 16 saves in defeat.

The Rams will now host #15 Oneonta State on Saturday, March 15th at 3:00 p.m.
