Rams Pick Up First Win in Season Opener

Farmingdale State - 21, Manhattanville - 13


Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's lacrosse team opened the 2013 season today with a 21-13 victory over visiting Manhattanville College (0-4). The Rams had three players scoring four goals, while sophomore midfielder Christy Thoden (Bayport, N.Y.) finished with four assists, two goals and 15 draw controls.

Farmingdale State jumped ahead to a 3-0 lead with goals from sophomore attack Nicole Marzocca (West Babylon, N.Y.), sophomore midfielder Jackie Kennedy (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) and Thoden. The Valiants got on the board with 22:12 left to make it 3-1. Senior attack Carly Schneider (Merrick, N.Y.) added a goal seven seconds later for a 4-1 Rams advantage, but Manhattanville scored three straight to tie the game at 4-4.

Farmingdale State responded with five consecutive goals and would hold a 10-5 lead at the break. In the second, the Rams led by more than four the entire way, leading by 10 goals with 21 minutes left to play.

Schneider finished with a team-leading four goals and three assists, while Marzocca and senior midfielder Jillian Pironti (Seaford, N.Y.) also had four goals. Thoden's 15 draw controls was three shy of tying her school record.

For Manhattanville, junior attack Casandra Honovich (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) scored six goals, five ground balls and four draw controls. Sophomore goalkeeper Kirsten Shaughnessy (LeCenter, Minn.) made 13 saves in defeat.

Farmingdale State will now face Old Westbury tomorrow, Monday, March 11 at 3:30 p.m. The game will be played at Farmingdale State due to the field conditions at Old Westbury.
