Rams Fall in Close Game with Vassar
Vassar College - 20, Farmingdale State - 18
Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's lacrosse team fell on Monday afternoon in a close game, 20-18, with non-conference opponent Vassar College (3-2). The Rams were tied 12-12 at halftime, but fell to 3-3 overall with the loss, despite a 15 save effort by junior goalkeeper Courtney Cook (Deer Park, N.Y.).
Vassar took a three goal lead in the first five minutes of play, but the Rams responded with two goals in a 46 second span from sophomore midfielder Emily Williams (Centerport, N.Y.) and senior attack Justine Rothar (Levittown, N.Y.) to cut the deficit to 3-2. Both teams traded goals until the half with the score tied at 12-12.
In the second half, Williams scored her fifth goal of the day just 42 seconds in to give Farmingdale State a 13-12 lead, before Vassar rallied to score eight consecutive goals and seemingly put the game out of reach with the score 20-13 and 15 minutes on the clock. But the Rams scored the final five goals of the game, two each by sophomore attack Carly Schneider (Merrick, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Kim Rigney (Holbrook, N.Y.), but falling short in the comeback.
Farmingdale State's Rothar led the scoring with eight points (six goals, two assists), while Williams finished the day with five goals and one assist. Schneider scored three goals and Rigney had two goals.
Vassar was led by midfielder Sarah Warner with a school single-game record of nine goals and two assists. Goalkeeper Heather Kesselman got the win with six saves in her 30 minutes played in the second half.
Farmingdale State will now host the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Wednesday, March 30th at 4:00 p.m. in a Skyline Conference game.
