2009 Women's Lacrosse Season Recap


Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women’s lacrosse team captured their first-ever Skyline Conference Championship this past Saturday, with a 16-13 victory over Montclair State, advancing to the Division III NCAA Tournament. The Rams faced #13 in the nation, Babson College in the opening round and were defeated 19-7.

Farmingdale went undefeated in Skyline play, 7-0, defeating Montclair in the regular-season to break their 18 game conference win streak, and entered the playoffs as the number one seed. Before defeating Montclair State in the championship game, the Rams easily defeated Kean University in the semifinal round, 24-10. Farmingdale set a new school record for wins holding an 11-3 overall record.

Team captains Theresa Rokee and Justine Rothar tied for the team lead with 57 goals apiece, as Farmingdale outscored their opponents by 119 goals this year. Rothar also added 23 assists totaling 80 points, breaking the single-season scoring record. Rokee, a senior, will leave Farmingdale as the All-Time leading scorer.

Kathy Waite, Jackie Messina and Shannon Reardon each scored over 20 goals, helping to lead the balanced scoring attack.

Sophomores Chelsea Bjornnson and Caitlin Brown led the team defensively. Bjornnson led the team in caused turnovers and ground balls, while Brown scored 9 goals from her defensive position.

Freshman goalie Courtney Cook was named the Skyline Tournament MVP after posting 22 saves in the semifinal game and 23 saves in the Championship game. Cook finished the year with a .590 save percentage, which ranks #4 in the Nation amongst Division III goalies.
