#10 Babson - 19, Farmingdale State -7

Babson Park, Mass. – The Farmingdale State women's lacrosse team fell in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament, 19-7, on Wednesday night to host Babson College. The Beavers, who are ranked 10th in the nation in the most recent IWLCA poll, advance to Saturday’s Second Round at Salisbury University where they will take on the top-ranked Sea Gulls at 11:30 a.m.

Making its third straight NCAA Tournament appearance and hosting for the first time, Babson extended its current winning streak to 13 games – the longest in program history. The Beavers were led by junior Anna Collins (Winchester, Mass.), who recorded four goals and three groundballs, and senior captain Jackie Godfrey (Franklin, Mass.), who added three goals and three assists. Senior captain Jess Parker (Cataumet, Mass.) finished with three goals and one assist, first-year Trisha Babson (Duxbury, Mass.) led all players with nine draw controls to go along with two goals and one assist, and junior Kaitlyn Pettengill (Hopkinton, Mass.) contributed two goals and five groundballs.

Sophomore Ellen McCurdy (Weston, Mass.) led the Babson defense with three caused turnovers, and first-year Bridget McCurdy (Weston, Mass.) contributed three draw controls and three groundballs. Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Macary (Woodbury, Conn.) went the distance in net for the Beavers, making seven saves.

Playing in its first-ever NCAA Tournament contest, Farmingdale State (11-4) received four goals from senior Theresa Rokee (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and two goals and four draw controls from first-year Shannon Reardon (North Babylon, N.Y.). Sophomore Justine Rothar (Levittown, N.Y.) chipped in with one goal and one assist, while sophomore Jackie Messina (Nesconset, N.Y.) picked up a team-high four groundballs. First-year goalie Courtney Cook (Deer Park, N.Y.) played the entire contest in net for the Rams, finishing with 12 saves.

Godfrey helped Babson jump out to an early 2-0 advantage, as she assisted Collins on the game’s first goal at 29:42 and then netted one of her own at 28:48. Rokee answered with Farmingdale State’s first goal of the evening at 27:45, but the Beavers rattled off seven unanswered scores over the next nine minutes to build a commanding 9-1 lead. Trisha Babson ignited the run with back-to-back goals, while Godfrey, Parker, and Collins each followed with scores to make it 7-1. Godfrey then scored her third of the night and Pettengill added her first on a free position at 18:26 to cap off the 7-0 spurt.

Rothar and Rokee sandwiched goals around a score by Babson senior Lindsay Bucci (Medford, Mass.) to make it a 10-3 game with 13:52 left in the first, but that would be as close as the Rams would get the rest of the way. The Beavers scored six of the period’s final seven goals to take a 16-4 lead into the break and then held the visitors to just three goals on only five shots in the second half to claim the 19-7 win.

Bucci and sophomore Alyssa Hood (Newport, R.I.) each joined Pettengill with two goals each for Babson, and Ellen McCurdy also scored a goal in the win. Sophomore Kristy Benoit (Shrewsbury, Mass.) added an assist for the Beavers, while junior Kathy Waite (Levittown, N.Y.) recorded one assist for Farmingdale State.
