Vassar's First Half Stops Rams Streak
Vassar College - 13, Farmingdale State - 8
Poughkeepsie, N.Y. (April 7, 2009)– The
Farmingdale State women's lacrosse team fell behind 11-5 in the
first half against Vassar College (4-6) and could not overcome the
deficit, falling 13-8, and breaking a four game win streak on
Tuesday afternoon. The Rams record now stands at 5-3 overall.
The Brewers got on board less than a minute into the game as
sophomore attack Moe Byrne laid a ball off to senior attack Jessie
Albert who fired home her ninth goal of the year. It looked as
though it would be an easy day for Vassar, as the Brewers raced out
to a quick 5-0 lead in just over six minutes, thanks to another
tally from Albert, and one apiece from Byrne, senior midfielder
Christine Eaccarino, and junior midfielder Larisa Lasko.
However, four unanswered goals, three from sophomore midfielder
Justine Rothar (Levittown, N.Y.) and one from freshman attack
Jessica Maddaloni (Deer Park, N.Y.) pulled the Rams to within a
goal, 5-4, with 11:07 to play in the half. The Brewers responded by
outscoring Farmingdale 6-1 in the final ten minutes of the half to
take an 11-5 lead into the final frame. Eaccarino played a large
role in reestablishing her team’s advantage during that time,
with two goals and two assists.
That halftime lead proved crucial for Vassar. After their
high-scoring first half, the Brewers struggled offensively in the
second, as Farmingdale outscored Vassar, 3-2.
For the Rams, Rothar powered the offense with five goals.
Maddaloni, senior midfielder Theresa Rokee (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), and
sophomore midfielder Jackie Messina (Smithtown, N.Y.) added one
goal apiece. Freshman goalkeeper Courtney Cook (Deer Park, N.Y.)
made 10 saves for the Rams in the loss.
Farmingdale State now hosts Skyline opponent Polytechnic on
Saturday, April 11th at 10:00 a.m.
