Rams Fall But Have Good Showing against Stevens

Stevens - 17, Farmingdale State - 9

Hoboken, N.J. - The Farmingdale State women's lacrosse team fell to Stevens, 17-9, in their season opener on Saturday night at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J., but had a great showing from a squad featuring just three upperclassmen.

The Rams went up 1-0 with a goal from freshman midfielder Shannon Reardon (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon), before sophomore attacker Leah Wasserman scored twice just 1:40 apart to put the Ducks on top 2-1 with 25:31 to go in the first. Sophomore midfielder Christine Smith netted an unassisted goal to put Stevens on top 3-1.

Senior midfielder Theresa Rokee (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) scored her first of four goals to get the Rams back within one goal, 3-2, but Stevens scored seven straight and would hold an 11-3 lead at the halftime break.

In the second half, Farmingdale scored the first two goals with an unassisted goal, her second of the day, from sophomore midfielder Justine Rothar (Levittown, N.Y./Division Ave.). Rokee added the second goal of the half, making the score 11-5 Stevens with 23 minutes left to play.

Wasserman and Smith combined for three straight goals for Stevens over the next six minutes, while junior attacker Kathy Waite (Levittown, N.Y./Division Ave.) would break the streak with a goal for the Rams, 14-6. Smith and Wasserman both scored another for Stevens, before Rokee answered with her final two goals of the night to make it 16-8 with 8:42 on the clock.

Stevens scored one more, while Rothar added Farmingdale State's final goal of the night with 51 seconds left. Rothar finished with three goals, two assists and a team-leading five draw controls.

Freshman Courtney Cook (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) was strong in goal for the Rams, despite allowing 17 goals. The rookie made 17 saves in the first collegiate game of her career, stopping several 1-on-1 chances for Stevens.

Farmingdale State will travel to scrimmage Dowling College on Friday, March 6th at 4:00 p.m., before their home opener on St. Patrick's Day, March 17th, against Western Connecticut at 4:00 p.m.
