Rams Fall to Conference Rival Montclair State

Montclair, N.J. – Sophomore midfielder Cora Delfini (New Egypt, NJ / New Egypt) scored a career-high eight goals, while senior midfielder Morgan MacPhee (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East) added five as Montclair State knocked off defending Skyline Conference champion Farmingdale State 21-14 in a rematch of their 2009 Skyline Championship contest.

Freshman Kailee Beal (Succasunna, NJ / Roxbury) and sophomore Jess Curran (Yorktown Heights, NY / Lakeland) each had two goals as the Red Hawks won their second straight and moved back to the .500 mark at 3-3 overall, 2-0 in the Skyline. Montclair also avenged two losses to the Rams last season, including a 16-13 setback in the championship game. Farmingdale is the only Skyline team to defeat the Red Hawks since the league’s inception in 2006.

Junior attack Justine Rothar (Levittown, NY / Division Ave.) added seven goals as the Rams fell to 1-2 on the year, 1-1 in the Skyline. The loss also snapped Farmingdale’s eight-game regular-season conference winning streak.

Montclair State jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first 10 minutes of the contest as Delfini got the scoring started 48 seconds into the contest and MacPhee connected twice. Farmingdale cut the lead to 6-4 with 10 minutes to play in the opening period as Rothar netted the second of her goals. MacPhee and Delfini responded with goals to push the lead back to four with a minute left however Rothar and Emily Williams (Centerport, NY / Harborfields) each scored with the latter finding the back of the net with two seconds left as the Montclair lead was 8-6 at the break.

The Red Hawks would go up four again early in the second half before Farmingdale answered back with two of its own as the Montclair lead was 10-8 with 25:19 to play. MacPhee would score twice, the second with MSU shorthanded, and Delfini added her fifth as Montclair pulled out to a 13-8 lead. The teams then treaded the next four goals and Delfini’s sixth of the game pushed Montclair to 16-11 advantage with 13:40 remaining.

Ashley Tsirigotis’ (Islip Terrace, NY / East Islip) free-position goal 33 seconds later got Farmingdale within four however Curran, Delfini and Maggie Fallon (Cherry Hill, NJ / Camden Catholic) each scored in a 1:15 span as Montclair went up 19-12 with 7:32 to play.

Delfini added six caused turnovers, four draws and three ground balls to her game while MacPhee and Beal registered five and four draw controls apiece. Freshman goalkeeper Tiffani Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) made 14 stops for the Red Hawks.

Williams finished with five goals for Farmingdale, which got four saves from senior Courtney Caden (Setauket, NY / Ward Melville). Tsirigotis added six draws while Yesenia Quintanilla (Freeport, NY / Freeport) and Caden each had four ground balls. The Rams held a 36-34 edge in shots.

Both teams go out on the road in Skyline Conference matchups on Saturday, March 27. Montclair travels to Mahwah, NJ to face Ramapo College at 1:00 pm. The Rams will be at Maritime College on Friday, March 26th in a 7:00 pm contest.
