FSC Falls to Mount Saint Mary; Kantzian Registers 10 Steals

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State women's basketball team hosted Skyline Conference opponent Mount Saint Mary College on Tuesday evening and fell, 72-36. In the loss, FSC freshman guard freshman guard Victoria Kantzian (Staten Island, N.Y.) registered a career-high 10 steals a mark that ranks fifth in program history for a single game.  The Rams dropped to 4-15 overall and 3-11 in Skyline play, while MSMC improved to 14-3, 11-1.

Over the opening four minutes, the Rams held a 3-1 advantage on an Adrianna Romo-Leroux (Selden, N.Y.) layup and a free-throw from junior forward Tiffany Sosa (New Hyde Park, N.Y.).

The Knights tied the score with a layup by Lauren Desrats but the Rams quickly responded as Kantzian made a jump shot on the next trip down the floor.

With 4:31 on the clock, MSMC senior guard Katie Smith knocked down a 3-pointer to go in front, 6-5.

Following a timeout by FSC, Sosa connected on a pair of layups in a 4-2 spurt to put the Rams back in front by one, 9-8.

In the final 1:53 of the quarter, Mount Saint Mary used a pair of free-throws, a 3-pointer and a layup to take a 15-9 lead into the second.

The Knights recorded the first 11 points of the second quarter to take a 17-point lead at 26-9. The Rams played MSMC even the rest of the way as they trailed 34-17 at the halftime break.

Farmingdale State opened the third quarter with four consecutive layups, including two by freshman forward Lissette Cordero (West Babylon, N.Y.), to cut their deficit to nine, 34-25.

Desrats stopped the run with a 3-pointer before another layup by the Rams made it a 10-point game.

Mount Saint Mary closed the quarter with 17 consecutive points to regain a commanding 54-27 advantage.

The Rams were outscored 18-9 in the fourth quarter as they fell, 72-36.

Sosa registered a team-high 13 points on 60% shooting from the floor. She also tallied a season-high nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Sophomore guard Jenna Pignataro (Farmingville, N.Y.) produced nine points on 4-for-7 shooting, while Kantzian had four points, to go along with her 10 steals. Cordero had four points and seven rebounds and Romo-Leroux tallied four points, six rebounds and three assists in the loss.

Desrats led the way for the Mount Saint Mary with 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.

The women's basketball team will next play host to St. Joseph's-Brooklyn in a Skyline Conference game on Tuesday, February 7th at 6:00 p.m.
