FSC Cruises to Non-Conference Victory Over Medgar Evers

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State women's basketball team hosted non-conference opponent Medgar Evers on Wednesday evening and cruised to a 68-37 victory. The Rams earned their first win of the season and are 1-3 overall, while the Cougars fell to 1-2.

The Rams took a 25-8 lead after one quarter behind 13 points by junior forward Layla Mendoza (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.) and six from sophomore guard Erin Conte (Melville, N.Y.). Farmingdale State led 10-6 and scored five straight baskets to extend the advantage to 14.

FSC opened the second quarter with two points apiece from senior guard Emily Pohlaski (Huntington, N.Y.), Mendoza and junior forward Tiffany Sosa (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) to take a commanding 31-8 lead.

Freshman guard Victoria Kantzian (Staten Island, N.Y.) followed with a 3-pointer to give the Rams a 26-point advantage.

Still leading by 26 with 6:24 to play in the half, another 3-pointer by Kantzian put FSC in front, 39-10.

Farmingdale State was ahead 45-13 heading into the third quarter and opened with a Jenna Pignataro (Farmingville, N.Y.) 3, before back-to-back layups by Mendoza and Conte.

The Rams led 62-29 and tallied six fourth quarter points en route to the 68-37 victory.

Mendoza shot 9-for-14 from the field for a game-high 19 points, to go along with seven rebounds. Kantzian knocked down a trio of 3-pointers and totaled 12 points, while Conte recorded 11 points, four assists and a career-best five steals. Freshman forward Lissette Cordero (West Babylon, N.Y.) went 5-for-7 shooting for 10 points and four rebounds, Pohlaski registered two points, three rebounds and six steals, and junior guard Monica Cordova (Malverne, N.Y.) produced seven steals, six rebounds and four assists.

Senior forward Jocelyn Lebron (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) tallied four steals and six rebounds, freshman guard Adrianna Romo-Leroux (Selden, N.Y.) added three points, two rebounds and two assists, and junior guard Taylah Inman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had two points and four rebounds.

Senior guard Emily Zeblisky (Northport, N.Y.) recorded a basket for two points and junior guard Autumn Barnes (Middle Island, N.Y.) pulled down three rebounds in the win.

As a team, FSC totaled 29 steals which ranks 10th on the all-time list.

The Rams will next travel to play Skyline Conference opponent Sarah Lawrence on Saturday, November 19th at 12:00 p.m.
