FSC Outlasts St. Joseph's-LI on Senior Day

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The FSC women's basketball team defeated St. Joseph's-Long Island, 93-84, in a home Skyline Conference game this afternoon on Senior Day. The Rams improved to 10-9 overall and 8-8 in conference play with the win.

Prior to tip-off, Alexis Jackson (Central Islip, N.Y.), Stacy Papantoniou (Whitestone, N.Y.), Mackenzie Tierney (Levittown, N.Y.) and Anna Zaborowska (East Patchogue, N.Y.) were each honored for senior day.

The Rams held a five-point advantage after one and extended their lead to 26-18 as Zaborowska opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer off the pass by Jackson.

FSC led 28-20 before a quick 9-0 run by the Golden Eagles (12-8, 9-8 Skyline) put them up by one with 7:03 left on the clock.

Trailing 36-33 with 3:33 remaining, eight straight Farmingdale State points gave the Rams a five point edge, 41-36. The Rams took a 46-40 lead into the break as freshman forward Layla Mendoza (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.) led the way with 23 first half points on 9-of-17 shooting.

With the Rams up 53-44 with eight minutes left on the clock in the third quarter, St. Joseph's-Long Island used a 9-1 run to cut their deficit to just one point at 54-53.

Farmingdale State led 63-61 in the final minute of the quarter before a layup from freshman forward Samantha Muller (North Babylon, N.Y.) put FSC on top, 65-61.

Trailing 74-69 with 5:58 left to play, Golden Eagles' Catherine Siounis (Greenlawn, N.Y.) hit a jumper before four points from teammate Alyssa Adomaites (East Northport, N.Y.) gave St. Joe's the lead, 75-74.

With 3:30 remaining and FSC down, 77-76, freshman forward Kalena Ricketts (Cambria Heights, N.Y.) and Mendoza tallied layups to regain a three-point advantage, 80-77.

After St. Joe's-Long Island was fouled and hit 1-of-2 free-throws, Zaborowska knocked down a 3-pointer to put Farmingdale State in front, 83-78.

The Golden Eagles trailed 85-80 before a layup and a free-throw cut their deficit to two with just one minute to play.

With 27 seconds on the clock, Farmingdale State freshman guard Erin Conte (Melville, N.Y.) was fouled on back-to-back possessions and hit all four free-throws to go ahead, 89-83. 

Muller and Zaborowska each hit a pair of free-throws down the stretch as the Rams went on for the 93-84 victory.

Mendoza led the way for FSC with a game-high 36 points, to go along with 11 rebounds, four assists, two steals and three blocked shots. Muller recorded 29 points, 14 rebounds, three assists and four steals, while Zaborowska tallied 16 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks. 

For St. Joseph's-Long Island, Adomaites registered a team-high 18 points in defeat.

FSC next will travel to play conference opponent St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Tuesday, February 15th at 5:00 p.m.
