Rams Outlast Manhattanville in Overtime; Hand Valiants First Loss

Farmingdale State - 73, Manhattanville - 70 (F/OT)


Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's basketball team hosted Manhattanville College this evening in Farmingdale, N.Y. and outlasted the Valiants for a 73-70 overtime victory. The Rams handed Manhattanville their first loss of the season and improved to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in the Skyline.

The Valiants (8-1, 4-1 Skyline) opened up a 10-5 advantage over the first four minutes and extended their lead to eight after senior guard Spencer Shore (Boca Raton, Fla.) knocked down a 3-pointer.

The Rams trailed by seven, 16-9, with 2:33 on the clock and used baskets from freshman forward Layla Mendoza (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.) and senior guard Anna Zaborowska (East Patchogue, N.Y.) to cut their deficit to three.

Shore hit another 3-pointer in the final minute of the quarter as Manhattanville took a 19-13 advantage into the second.

Over the first 5:18 of the second quarter, Farmingdale State went on a 20-4 run to open up a 10-point lead at 33-23.

The Valiants responded with nine unanswered points to close within one, 33-32.

Following a jumper by FSC junior guard Alexis Jackson (Central Islip, N.Y.) with 2:25 remaining in the half, Shore knocked down a 3-pointer and freshman forward Niyona Smith (Towson, Md.) recorded a layup as Manhattanville led 37-35 at the break.

Mendoza and Shore both tallied 17 first-half points.

In the third quarter, Farmingdale State outscored Manhattanville, 14-11, as they took a one-point advantage, 49-48, into the fourth.

Over the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter, each team scored six points as FSC maintained their one-point lead, 55-54.

With 2:48 on the clock, Mendoza recorded a layup before freshman forward Samantha Muller (North Babylon, N.Y.) hit a free-throw to put the Rams on top, 58-54.

On their next possession, Manhattanville senior guard Faith Johnson-Desilvia (Riverhead, N.Y.) tallied a layup to close within two.

With 51 seconds left, Valiants' senior forward Ali Mikaele (Silver Spring, Md.) tied the game at 58-58 with a layup.

Johnson-Desilvia notched another layup with just 20 seconds remaining to put Manhattanville ahead, 60-58.

After a Farmingdale State timeout, Mendoza scored with just seven seconds to play to knot the score at 60-60.

The Valiants missed on their final attempt as the game headed into overtime.

The Rams opened OT with a layup and free-throw from freshman forward Kalena Ricketts (Cambria Heights, N.Y.) to go ahead, 63-60.

Following a layup by Manhattanville, Muller recorded a basket and Mendoza converted a three-point play to give Farmingdale State a 68-62 advantage.

With 2:12 left in the overtime period, Mikaele was fouled and hit both free-throws. On the Valiants next possession, Shore knocked down a 3-pointer to cut their deficit to just one at 68-67.

FSC hit one free-throw to go in front, 69-67, before Mikaele registered a layup to tie the score, 69-69, with 33 seconds on the clock.

Mendoza was fouled on Farmingdale State's next trip down the floor and hit both at the line to take a two-point lead with 16 seconds left.

Manhattanville turned the ball over with seven seconds remaining before Zaborowska notched a layup to go up, 73-69.

The Valiants tallied a free-throw in the final second as FSC went on for the 73-70 overtime victory.

Mendoza led all scorers with 26 points, to go along with 10 rebounds and three steals. Muller recorded 14 points, 10 rebounds and a game-high six assists, while Ricketts produced 13 points, 16 rebounds and two assists. Zaborowska notched 11 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two steals and junior guard Mackenzie Tierney (Levittown, N.Y.) had seven points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two steals in the win.

Shore registered a team-high 20 points for Manhattanville, while Johnson-Desilvia tallied 16 points, 10 rebounds and six assists in defeat.

Farmingdale State next hosts non-conference opponent John Jay on Saturday, December 11th at noon.
