Rams Fall to Brooklyn in Season Opener

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's basketball team played host to non-conference opponent Brooklyn College in their season opener this evening and fell, 83-52. The Rams dropped to 0-1, while the Bulldogs improved to 2-0.

Brooklyn started quickly as they jumped out to an 11-2 lead over the first 5:08 of the game. 

After a layup by FSC freshman forward Layla Mendoza (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.), the Bulldogs tallied six unanswered points to take a 13-point advantage at 17-4.

Brooklyn led 24-9 and opened the second quarter with three straight free-throws by freshman forward Mary Dolgin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to go in front, 27-9.

Still down 18, Rams' junior guard Alexis Jackson (Central Islip, N.Y.) knocked down a 3-pointer to close the gap to 29-14.

Farmingdale State trailed, 36-21, with 4:17 left in the half, before a Brooklyn 8-0 run extended their lead to 44-21.

In the final minute of the second quarter, freshman guard Jenna Pignataro (Farmingville, N.Y.) hit a 3 and sophomore guard Stacy Papantoniou (Whitestone, N.Y.) tallied a layup as FSC entered the break down, 44-26.

With 6:24 left in the third, the Rams were down by 19, 53-34, but used three straight layups and a free-throw to close within 12, 53-41.

Brooklyn answered with an 8-2 run to close the quarter as they took a 61-43 lead into the fourth.

The Bulldogs outscored Farmingdale State, 22-9, in the final quarter to go on for the 83-52 non-conference victory.

Mendoza recorded a team-high 11 points, while Jackson had 10 points, six rebounds and two assists. Freshman forward Kalena Ricketts (Cambria Heights, N.Y.) tallied eight points, nine rebounds and three steals and senior guard Anna Zaborowska (East Patchogue, N.Y.) registered seven points and nine rebounds. Papantoniou added six points and four assists off the bench for FSC.

Senior forward Chanel Jemmott (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the way for Brooklyn with a game-high 24 points and 14 rebounds.

The Rams next will travel to play Skyline opponent Mount Saint Vincent on Tuesday, November 16th at 6:00 p.m.
