Rams Fall to NYU in Season Opener

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's basketball team opened the 2019-20 season with a home non-conference game against NYU this evening and fell, 91-47. With the win, the Violets improved to 2-0 on the year.

Leading 6-3 with 7:34 remaining in the first quarter, NYU used back-to-back 3's from Lauren Koyama (Palo Alto, Calif.) and Janean Cuffee (New York, N.Y.) to go out in front by nine. After a Nia Miller (Brooklyn, N.Y.) 3-pointer cut the deficit to 14-6 with 4:45 on the clock, the Violets closed the quarter on a 14-3 run to extend the advantage to 28-9.

The Rams (0-1) opened the second quarter with an Anna Zaborowska (East Patchogue, N.Y.) jumper but NYU followed with a 14-0 run to go ahead by 31, 42-11. NYU took a 48-23 lead into the break after shooting 56% from the field and 53% from behind the arc in the first half.

The Violets came out of halftime rolling and recorded the first 12 points of the third quarter to extend the lead to 60-23. NYU took a 36-point edge into the fourth and outscored FSC 19-11 en route to the 91-47 victory.

Miller led the way for Farmingdale State with a team-high 15 points, while junior guard Alexis Hunter (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored 13 points and secured a game-high 10 rebounds.

For the Violets, Cuffee had 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting to go along with five assists and freshman guard Brooklyn Shelton (Botetourt, Va.) added 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting and three steals. NYU tallied assists on 30-of-36 made field goals in the win.

The Rams next will host non-conference opponent Albertus Magnus on Thursday, November 14th at 7:00 p.m.
