Farmingdale State - 102, Mount Saint Vincent - 77
Farmingdale, N.Y. - In a Skyline Conference women's basketball game this evening, Farmingdale State sophomore guard Destiny Hurt (Long Beach, N.Y.) recorded 40 points, eight rebounds, five assists and five steals to lead the Rams past Mount Saint Vincent, 102-77, on senior night. With the win, FSC improved to 8-9 in Skyline play and has clinched a spot in the upcoming conference playoffs.
Prior to tonight's game, Farmingdale State's lone senior Selena LaFranca (Smithtown, N.Y.) was honored for senior day as she was playing in her final regular season home game.
With Farmingdale State (8-16) leading 12-10 just under five minutes into the game, Hurt and sophomore guard Nia Miller (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recorded baskets to give FSC a six-point advantage. After a pair of free-throws from Dolphins' (6-16, 5-12 Skyline) sophomore forward Aria Rheams (Alexandria, VA), Hurt tallied a 3-pointer and a layup to put the Rams ahead 21-12.
Farmingdale State led by eight, 27-19, after one quarter and opened the second on a 9-4 run, including a pair of 3's from LaFranca, to extend their lead to 13, 36-23.
Trailing 41-30 with four minutes left in the second quarter, Mount Saint Vincent freshman guard Aaliyah Lyn (Queens, N.Y.) registered back-to-back jumpers to cut the deficit to seven, 41-34.
With 2:02 remaining, FSC led 43-37 and closed the quarter on a 10-4 run to take a 53-41 lead into the halftime break.
Hurt tallied 21 points in the first half, while Miller had 12 points and six assists. The Dolphins registered 14 assists on their 16 made field goals in the first 20 minutes.
FSC opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer from sophomore guard Jami Cardenas (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and back-to-back layups from sophomore forward Alexis Hunter (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Hurt to open up a 19-point advantage. After Lyn tallied a layup for CMSV, a 6-1 run gave Farmingdale State a commanding 66-44 lead.
With the Rams ahead 72-52 with two minutes left in the third quarter, LaFranca and Miller registered 3-pointers in a 6-2 run to put FSC up 78-54 heading into the fourth.
Over the first five minutes of the fourth, Mount Saint Vincent outscored Farmingdale State 15-7 to cut their deficit to 16, 85-69.
Still leading by 16, 90-74, with 3:24 left, Cardenas produced back-to-back 3's to give the Rams a 96-74 advantage. Over the final 2:08, LaFranca tallied a pair of 3-pointers as FSC went on for the 102-77 conference victory.
Hurt shot 18-of-36 from the field and broke her own school record set earlier this season for most field goals made in one game. Cardenas recorded a season-high 20 points as she shot 6-for-7 from downtown, while LaFranca registered a season-high 18 points. Miller tallied a double-double with 18 points and 12 assists and Hunter produced four points, eight rebounds, four assists, three blocks and three steals in the win.
The Dolphins were led by junior forward Dez Brown (Riverhead, N.Y.), who shot 9-for-11 from the field for a team-high 19 points, and sophomore guard Gabriela Goldman, who recorded 16 points, six assists and five rebounds.
FSC next travels to play Yeshiva (@ Maritime College) for their final game of the regular season on Saturday, February 16th at 8:45 p.m.
