Farmingdale State - 90, Sarah Lawrence - 26
Bronxville, N.Y. - Sophomore guard Destiny Hurt (Long Beach, N.Y.) scored a career-high 36 points as the Farmingdale State women's basketball team cruised past Sarah Lawrence, 90-26, in a Skyline Conference game last night. With the victory, the Rams improved to 6-14 on the year and 6-7 in conference play.
After FSC outscored the Gryphons 28-9 in the first, the Rams opened the second quarter with eight unanswered points including five by Hurt and three from freshman guard Mackenzie Tierney (Levittown, N.Y.). Sarah Lawrence (1-20, 1-15) used a Emmamazy Prior (Germantown, N.Y.) 3-pointer to end the run but Farmingdale State sophomore guard Jami Cardenas (Bay Shore, N.Y.) responded with a 3 and pair of free-throws on the next two FSC possessions to increase the lead to 41-12. The Rams went into the break up by 30, 46-16, as Hurt led all scorers with 23 points on 11-of-15 shooting.
In the third quarter, the Farmingdale State defense held the Gryphons to 9-percent shooting (1-for-11) and outscored SLC, 30-6. Hurt registered 13 points (6-of-11) while sophomore guard Alexis Hunter (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had five points and five rebounds.
FSC controlled a low scoring fourth quarter as they edged Sarah Lawrence, 14-4, to cap off the 90-26 road win.
Hurt, who shot 17-of-26 from the floor, set the school record for most made field goals in a game. She surpassed Kimberly Blakney and Tyra Harrison (twice) who had each recorded 16 baskets in a single game. Hunter finished the night with seven points and a career-best 22 rebounds which ranks third all-time in a game at FSC behind Blakney (26) and Kaelyn Ward (24). Cardenas poured in a career-high 20 points on 7-of-18 shooting, while senior guard Selena LaFranca (Smithtown, N.Y.) added 11 points in the victory.
FSC next will travel to Mount Saint Mary for a Skyline Conference game on Saturday, February 2nd at 1:00 p.m.
