Farmingdale State - 69, St. Joseph's-L.I. - 58
Patchogue, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's basketball team defeated St. Joseph's-Long Island, 69-58, this afternoon in Patchogue, N.Y. to earn their third straight conference win. The Rams improved to 5-10 overall and 5-5 in Skyline play, while the Golden Eagles dropped to 2-13, 1-8.
FSC started quickly as they jumped out to a 12-2 advantage just 4:36 into the game. Junior guard Nia Miller (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and sophomore guard Destiny Hurt (Long Beach, N.Y.) each had five points during the run.
Leading 15-8 with 1:37 left in the quarter, Farmingdale State junior forward Christina Rayfield (Commack, N.Y.) hit a jumper before Hurt tallied a layup to put FSC ahead 19-8.
After Hurt opened the second quarter with a layup, SJC-LI freshman guard Alyssa Signor (Farmingville, N.Y.) recorded back-to-back layups to cut the deficit to 21-12.
Still leading by nine, 26-17, Rams' freshman guard Mary Meshanski (Ozone Park, N.Y.) knocked down a 3-pointer and both sophomore forward Alexis Hunter (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Miller registered layups to go in front 33-17. The Golden Eagles would tally a layup in the final seconds of the half as Farmingdale State led by 14, 33-19, at the break.
FSC opened the third quarter with six straight points to go up 39-19. St. Joseph's-Long Island responded with three free-throws from senior guard Alicia Indence (Centereach, N.Y.) and a 3-pointer from Signor to cut the Rams advantage to 39-25.
Farmingdale State answered with a 7-0 run, including five points from Hurt, to take their largest lead of the game, 46-25.
The Rams led 62-41 with four minutes left in the game and despite being outscored 17-7 the rest of the way, went on for the 69-58 Skyline Conference victory.
Farmingdale State was led by Miller, who tallied a season-high 23 points to go along with six assists and four rebounds, and Hurt, who produced 22 points, four assists and a game-high three steals. Hunter recorded six points, 10 rebounds and a career-high four blocks, while freshman guard Mackenzie Tierney (Levittown, N.Y.) added a career-high 10 rebounds in the win.
For SJC-LI, Signor had a team-high 23 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
The Rams next travel to the United States Merchant Marine Academy for a Skyline Conference game on Tuesday, January 15th at 5:30 p.m.
